It's Friday night and Ezreal decided to take the esteemed Luxanna Crownguard to a bar generally frequented by Delvers, Guardsmen, Rangers, and all sorts of other rough-and-tumble men and women who make up Union's thriving blue-collar community. The bar, of course, is quite a dive, with loud, boisterous people having just finished a day's work coming to take a load off and get frightfully hammered.

[This is an open mingle post for anybody who might, for whatever reason, find themselves in a dirty, grimy bar full of loud sweaty people on a Friday night. There will be mingling and, of course, the inevitable bar fight. Enlightened are encouraged to use their powers interestingly but remember - no lethal damage! It's all in good fun. Overenthusiastic enlightened may find themselves responsible for large chunks of the repair bill for the bar, be warned.

Also of note: legal drinking age is 18 years old but this bar is likely reasonably easy to get into if you're a bit underage.]

[Someone has stolen Armin's Warp Band! Gasp!

It's a very-recently-evolved Meredith, who is going to preen in front of the video screen for a while, from her place perched on a tree branch. Where is she? Where is Armin? Anyone's guess.

After a pause, the Kirlia will smile wickedly and swing the camera bit around to show a little lost Espurr standing at the base of the tree, making sad baby sounds. Meredith is shirking babysitting.

[After trying (unsuccessfully) to exclude Team Evolution from receiving the message, Armin decides to bite the bullet and be vague enough to prompt interest from his friends, but not be insulting:]

I wonder how far the Warp Bands can actually communicate with one another. Is there a certain point when it's...out of range? I suppose we'll find out, won't we.

[As for why this is a text and not a video...this next message is sent to people Armin's spoken to at least two or three times:]

[Locked to Armin and Roxas and maybe Lea later]

[Sora had every intention of signing up for the tournament. However he had been putting it off for a day while he tried to figure out which of his Pokemon would be best for this, as well as training for himself. Sure, he had a few misgivings about this whole situation- but Sora was never one to turn down a chance for competition. It'd be a good way to see where he stood against the other trainers, right?]

[Well, before he went to sign up, he decided to swing by the psychiatric ward Medical Center to do a regular visit to Roxas. He had hours to kill before the deadline came anyway. And on the way, he ran into Armin who decided to tag along. It was...a little strange, having someone else along to visit his brother- but Armin knew Roxas! So surely that'd be okay, right? Maybe it would cheer both Roxas and Armin up.]

[And so they make it to the medical center. After signing in to the visitor form, Sora makes his way to the direction of Roxas's room.]

Roxas's probably in his room right now. It's still a few hours until the cafeteria starts serving ice cream.

[That...is pretty much the only explanation that Armin has gotten so far to what's going on here.]

In fact, Armin and his little Pokemon friends -- including Nim the Mareep baby and the just-recently-hatched Espurr baby who insists on being held at all moments -- are sitting on top of Gertrude-the-Steelix's head. So anyone trying to approach...best tread lightly.

Armin is clearly in a mood.

[Fai is looking unusually somber, and even in monochrome, it's easy to tell that he's a lot paler than usual. On his shoulder stands Babycakes, now evolved into a Floette, like an equally serious guard of honor with her flower like a rifle against her shoulder.]

[The young man says nothing at first, just holds up a rather skillfull sketch of a poké ball. Those with a bit of knowledge in history should probably recognise at least the general shape and design of it.]

Nevermind that they put those machines there to force Tyrantrum to evolve without their consent, but... they use these. Team Evolution, I mean. They keep pokémon imprisoned in these things, just like in the old days.

[He draws a deep, shaky breath.]

Despite how abhorrent this practice is - and believe me, I understand if you're angry - we should remember that they are from a different place with different laws. Wild accusations and demands aren't going to do us any good, is it? It's better if we try to reason with them, try to make them see why such treatment is wrong.

After all, the people in the old days were not all evil. If they were, why would the Savior have thought us worth sacrificing herself over? They were just ignorant.

But I thought you should be... warned.

They were noticed a half hour before they arrived.

The Guardsmen atop the city walls, their keen senses trained to observe anything out of the ordinary, had not failed to observe the flight of birds disturbed from their nests and the distant shuddering of trees. The pace was steady. Not of wild Pokémon meandering about, but of something with fixed, determined purpose.

News spread quickly, as it ought. The Council was aware of the situation in five minutes flat, and the guard on the walls surreptitiously tripled in the same amount of time. It didn't take much longer for idle citizens to realize something was amiss, and as the rumors propagated -- There are people coming through the forest! -- so, too, did the number of people thronging at the gate craning their necks to get a look.

They emerge from the forest, their pace brisk and their numbers thirty strong. Many wear attire that is hardy, made for traveling - leather boots, thick wool pants, and long jackets in shades of deep crimson and black. Others, clearly of some higher rank, are clad in suits or other formal wear; a few wear pristine white coats that must have only just been changed. As they approach, most stare coolly upwards at the assembly gathered before them atop the walls of the city.

At their lead stands a man with a mild smile and shaggy red hair. Two others stand close beside him: a young woman in a crisp, fur-lined white coat, sleek black hair pristine and perfectly in place and a gentle smile on her face and an aloof woman with brown hair wearing a sharp suit who appears extremely disinterested in the proceedings.

The company pauses. And there is a long, awkward silence before the man with the red hair takes a step forward. He speaks, and his words, though understandable, have a strange, foreign inflection.

"My name is Rory Donnachaidh. We have come on behalf of our people to serve as a diplomatic presence to your city."

...Another awkward pause.

"...I believe it is appropriate to say - take us to your leader."

He smiles more broadly, as if he's made a joke.

---------

We are Team Evolution.

We represent a group of people with a common purpose - to restore humanity to the peaks it once ascended and to raise up all Pokémon alongside us. We call ourselves Team Evolution for the only path forward for both human and Pokémon is to evolve. When we realized that our signals could be detected no longer, our scouts reported that the reason was human sabotage. Imagine our surprise to learn that a human civilization lay so close to those mountains... But what do I say? You, of course, must all have experienced surprise in equal measures, no?

We have come here for reasons twofold: to establish relations with this city and to retrieve the materials that you have been holding for us. It was a prototype, you see, and we would wish to have it returned.

Of course, we understand that you have little reason to trust us and great reason to drive us away. We will not attempt to enter your city if that is preferred - but we will camp outside, between the forest and the gates, for the space of 10 days, after which we will depart, with or without our materials. We hope you will be willing to speak with us during this time. We would also like to... hold a demonstration to explain our actions, if you and your Council are willing.

Please, come and speak with us if you have any questions. That is an offer extended to anyone in your fine city. I shall personally ensure that any visitors are treated with the greatest of courtesies...

((For approximately 10 IC days, the people of Team Evolution will be camped outside of Union. The next part of this event will require sign-ups. There is an accompanying OoC post to this post here. Please see that post for more details.

Please feel free to use this IC post to talk with the NPCs. All responses here will receive an NPC response.))

[Armin decided that the best place to watch his eggs hatch is in the sector of the Habitats where he's been sleeping since the quakes -- because someone is independent to a fault and hasn't let on that his home was damaged. But it's better this way, because there's enough room for Meredith-the-Ralts and Murgatroyd-the-Cherubi to cluster around the two eggs, with Gertrude-the-Steelix (who does NOT belong in this part of the Habitats, wow) looming protectively over the little group.

The black-and-yellow striped egg had cracked first, and now it slowly splits open, revealing what appears to be a tiny ball of fluff. Armin draws in his breath, gently tugging Meredith away from poking at the new baby --

So I've heard that a lot of people have been investigating the mausoleum in the Old City, has anyone found anything other than Ghost-type Pokemon? There can be a lot said for a place where people honored their ancestors, and I'm hoping that everyone is treating these ruins kindly. This is a historical site, after all!

[She'd heard nasty rumors about possible looting and was hoping that they weren't true.]

I was also curious, have there been any other findings regarding the machines recovered. I don't have a head for technology myself, but I'm very curious.

[Audio message to filtered to Ezreal; very early morning]

Ezreal? Ezreal, are you there? Helloooo? It says it's transmitting, but if you're saying anything I can't hear you. Anyway, I have something important to discuss with you! Are you there? Ezreal!

[She'll keep going on until he answers. Or periodically checking every few minutes.]

[Has Armin been ambused by an Exeggcute? No, he just has his two little Pokemon eggs -- one is his reward, the other Eren's, since he's a little more suited for parenting than his Skarmory-ish buddy -- clustered close beside him as he opens up the grainy video on the Warp Band. Mama Hen mode: activated.

He'll give the tiniest of waves, looking unsure that this whole "broadcasting" thing will even work. Besides the two eggs -- both of which appear to be wearing sweaters -- Meredith the Ralts is there, along with a new buddy, Murgatroyd the Cherubi. The cute is a little overwhelming, feel free to shield your eyes.
]

Erm. Hi. If...if anyone can hear me, of course. Ah, I was wondering if anyone had any...any tips for taking care of eggs? [A concerned look as he pats the nearest, slightly larger egg.] I...know it's best for them to stay in the Breeding Center, but...I don't...really want to leave them all alone. Without me. Alone. By themselves. Alone.

So...so any help would be most appreciated, thank you.

We found the source! There's some weird... machines in here! They're making a terrible noise that're making the Pokémon more aggressive!

[...]

My Pokémon're saying the noise's still here - so I think there's more of these machines! So everyone try to find the rest and stop them o --

Grrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaargh!

[Up and down the streets of Union, the message was passed on in hushed whispers and cries of disbelief. What could it mean? Machines? Man-made machines? It was impossible! For half a millennium, the only people outside of Union they had ever known were the occasional Shifters who wandered in from the wilderness. Who had made these? And why? ...To destroy Union? Did they finally have evidence of outside civilization, only to find that they intended to declare war?

As the groups began to trickle back into Union from the mountains, rumors ran rampant...

And in the present, the people of Union wait with bated breath for the next quake to come... 12 hours passed. A day. ...Two days. ......And still, nothing.

On the morning of the third day, the Warp Bands and emergency systems flicker to life once again without fanfare.]

This is the Union emergency broadcast system with an ongoing assessment of the situation.

......At this time, I am pleased to announce that no quakes have occurred for 72 hours, and no further unusual seismic activity can be detected.

[She pauses, as if to wait for cheering.]

The Council would like to express its immense gratitude and recognize all the citizens of Union who so selflessly gave of themselves throughout this crisis - in defending and restoring the city, in preventing the invasion from below, and in traveling into the depths of the unknown to prevent a calamity. For bravery in the face of immense danger, we have prepared a reward for all who lent their help and support in any way.

Though there is much in Union that remains to be done, the danger has passed for now.

[There comes another pause, a longer one. ...And when she speaks again, her tone is grave.]

The Council will also confirm at this time the reports that the earthquakes were partially caused by man. In response, the Elders have prepared the following statement:

[There is a soft clearing of the throat before she continues on. Her brisk, efficient voice seems to become tight with emotion.]

"Citizens of Union,

Since the time of the Savior, we, the Council, have sought one goal above all others: the survival and propagation of the human race, that we might once more live in harmony and unity in the land the gods have given to us, ever mindful that we share this land with those whom we are proud to call our equals and friends. For over 500 years, we have striven to guard the future of humanity, to ensure that we might never tread so foolish a path as we once did so many years ago. Long have we believed that we were the sole remnants of mankind - that any future, if we sought it, would lie solely within the works of our own hands.

Thanks to the efforts of our courageous citizens... we now know that this is not the case.

Union is not alone.

Rumors and whispers have already begun to spread, and we fear we cannot verify or deny their validity. We fear that such is impossible for anyone. We, too, are human. When we first heard this news, we were not your Council. We were nothing more than a group of frightened old men and women, afraid and uncertain of what it meant, fearful, for the first time, of what the future might hold.

But let us not live in fear.

Let us hold our heads high and let us be proud - be proud of our ancestors and be proud of Union, of all that we are and all that we shall be. We are the people chosen by the gods, the children of the Savior, and in honor of Her goals and Her vows, we chose our name long ago: Union. So let us unite! Let us unite in hope and in faith, and if we are truly not alone in this world, then let us meet our fellows with the same unity of heart! And if they so desire, they may freely join in the unity we offer...

The future lies ahead of us, boundless and infinite. Let us venture forth together... into this Brave New World!"

[The final words ring with conviction before the communication ends.]

((This post may be used as a mingle thread to discuss the news mentioned within. Much of Union remains in need of help, but thanks to the quick work of the characters in completing their mission, no towers collapsed entirely.))

The scream was audible from the street. It was the sound of a soul in pain. The sound, perhaps, of a librarian who has just entered her library to check for earthquake damage and seen every damn shelf and book in a huge heap. After the scream of horror finishes, she goes on with an encore performance of a stream of creative cursing about having people fired and whipped and flogged and banished, coming to a climax of "AND IF IT DOESN'T GET PROPERLY SECURED THIS TIME I WILL DO SOMETHING SO POINTLESSLY HIDEOUS TO YOU YOU'LL DIE AS MUCH FROM SURPRISE AS YOU DO FROM THE ACTUAL INJURIES! NOW MOVE!"

Some wild wingulls fly away in alarm with the volume of the last word.

[12 hours later]

Zarvora slowly emerged from the library and set down on the steps by the front door to massage her temples. She felt a migraine coming on, but at least her staff had an organized plan for putting everything back together. This put her personal projects back by weeks, if not months, though. Her Fletchling landed on her head in concern and looked down at her face, and she couldn't help but smile a bit at that as she looked back up. "What do you think, Charles? Did I over do it a bit?"

[((Dated to post-cave exploration))

Tiny recluse is still tiny, but not so reclusive -- especially not now that he has a new friend to visit and care for (new friend is a Steelix named Gertrude, fyi). Armin thinks it rude to leave his buddy all alone in the Habitats all the time, so an escape attempt has been performed!

Granted, his grandfather has been extra-busy with council-y business in the wake of the ore crisis, so it wasn't that hard for Armin and Meredith to sneak out. But still, they're free! They're out! He should be feeling very proud of himself, walking along the streets like a normal civilian. He should be all but skipping along the sidewalk, perhaps whistling a cheery tune.

Except he's not. Because, as it turns out, bonding with an enormous Pokemon sort of leaves you drained, mentally, physically and emotionally, and Armin doesn't have much emotion strength to spare. So he's sort of creeping along the street, frowning, radiating a tangible -- literally; if any passers-by aren't psychically prepared, his emotions are going to bleed over onto them -- aura of discomfort, nausea and exhaustion.

This also means that if anyone with a particularly potent emotional state passes by, it's going to hit Armin like a ton of bricks. Case in point: the loving couple who sidesteps boy and Ralts, drawing an uncharacteristic scowl from both.

I do enjoy listening to you prepare to wander out to your various deaths, but I've generously decided to share my knowledge with you anyway. For example, iron ore tends to be found underground. Of course, there's no limit to what stupidity can achieve, but if I were you--and I'm quite thankfully not--I'd try an Aron.

[A small sigh prefaces the very serious, just-on-this-side-of-shy voice.] I know other people have said this -- probably better than I will -- but just as an extra reminder for all those permitted to leave the city -- [Bitter? Him? Never!] -- make sure to wear lots of layers of thick clothing, even if it's unfashionable. Rougher, woollier fabric helps insulate heat. [It's funny because this kid has no idea what is and isn't fashionable.] Something around your lower legs to keep snow from getting into your boots and melting would also be good.

[A pause, the rustle of some papers.] -- oh, and don't forget about your Pokemon friends! Especially those who are more vulnerable to snow and cold, like Fire or Fairy types. I'm sure the shops have smaller warm things, if your friend is willing to put up with a woolly hat. I know mine wouldn't but -- ow! Don't poke me! Stop that!
