[Hiroshi seems to have gained quite a bit of confidence over the past few months. Admittedly, it's hard to tell with the famously reserved young man, but he seems to be less uneasy around his own Pokemon of late.]

Excuse me. I hate to be a bother, but I was wondering if anybody was interested in going to the Magnet Cave with me? I have heard rumors that certain Pokemon evolve with exposure to magnetic forces, and I believe Maxwell may have that capability. I am certain others in town would be interested in observing this phenomenon as well, assuming it is true.

Thank you for your time.

[The feed turns on to show Renko rubbing at her temple with her free hand for a moment, like she'd just woken up. Behind her appears to be a wall that's apparently quite old. Anyone who's been to the ruins will probably realize that's where she is.

She lets out a sigh before she speaks.]

Has anyone ever encountered a Pokémon in the wild that was unusually colored? I know that they're supposed to be unbelievably rare, but...I'm fairly certain I just encountered one.

[She mumbles something about the fact that she didn't even get a chance to try and bond with it, but it's not very audible.]

Are there any tricks to locating them? As in, do their behaviors differ from others of their species? I'd be interested in finding out if anyone else has experience with them.

Log Deputy: Wighty ([plurk.com profile] holsety)
Participating Characters: Atsuro, Kaido, Hiroshi
Plot Description: The Tropical Island seems to have strange heat-waves rolling in. From the distance, while surrounded by craggy peaks that deny access to most parts of the island it does appear to have some high mountainous area. Atsuro goes there partly out of curiosity, partly in search of materials for Good Rods, drags Hiroshi along with him because they're friends (kind of) and friends go out and do things together! Kaido is partly dragged along, partly decides to go himself out of concern for Atsuro and Hiroshi (that part is a secret).
Warnings/Notes: Nothing yet.

[PRIVATE; TO BANZU]

Hey, Mr. Banzu? I got the egg you wanted. Did you want to meet outside the Breeding Center to get it?

[OPEN; ACTION]

[Outside the Breeding Center, Guertena seems none the worse for wear for his brief paternity leave, back to painting thankfully water-soluable murals all over the place. Hiroshi sits, holding the egg in his lap and marveling over it. Strange how there's still no real indication of how or why Pokemon get eggs...[

Careful, Guertena. You know how the guards get if you're too ostentatious about that.

[Guertena snorts. He got 99 problems and guards ain't one. He does paint one on the wall however.]

[There's an unusually loud argument that can be heard coming from one of the housing units in the residential district. It's normally a pretty quiet household, but right now two male voices are booming from within, although the precise specifics are unclear. The word "science" seems to be heard every now and then, however, along with "Pokemon." Suddenly, there's a loud slapping noise, which seems to halt the argument still for a moment. Some low, terse words... and then the door bursts open, and the Yamane boy storms off, his Axew in tow despite shouts from his father to "get back here this instant."

Odd. The boy always seemed so well-behaved normally...

Outside, in the dark, Hiroshi heads over to the library steps. He stares up at it, but can't quite bring himself to go in yet. Finally, he sighs, sitting down on the steps, head in his hands. Takuro rubs his arm reassuringly.]

...I don't understand, Takuro. I'd been doing so well. Why did seeing that Mega Evolution at the tournament...?

[Oh look, it's everyone's favorite earnest, well-meaning, kind-to-all-living-creatures blond kiddo, just chilling in the park with his Pokemon buddies...

...including the absolutely enormous Steelix who's dozing and giving out gravelly snores. In fact, Armin and his little Pokemon friends -- including Nim the Mareep baby and the just-recently-hatched Espurr baby who insists on being held at all moments -- are sitting on top of Gertrude-the-Steelix's head. So anyone trying to approach...best tread lightly.

Armin is clearly in a mood.

[Not so much that he doesn't turn on his Warp Band and ask, shortly, with one of the most grim expressions he's ever worn:] Is anyone signing up for this Tournament?

[...the creepycute baby Espurr sort of ruins his brooding aura, tbh.]

[There's quite a setup in the park today. Crude-looking dummies are lined up, and currently several Pokemon seem to be trying to attack them. Apparently, someone is very serious about their training. Said person is currently going back and forth, monitoring progress, while a small set of gears follows him around curiously.]

Guertena, remember to keep a sharp eye. You have one Sketch, so make sure you make it count. Felidae, don't just leap at something expecting it to stay still long enough to be hit. Keep sharp, keep an eye out, and time your Charge and Spark properly. Martena, for GOD'S SAKE use something other than Harden or your opponents are going to whittle you away to nothing! Maxwell, good. Keep looking unassuming like that, then spring a Supersonic and a Sonic boom when they least expect it. Come on, everybody, we've only got so long to work on this.

[Takuro seems to be taking a breather.]

You too, Takuro. Remember, this was your idea. I'm counting on you to inspire the others, so you've got to do your best too.

[Takuro nods and renews his effort. Despite being tired, he seems... happy. Hiroshi watches all this, then mutters something quietly to the gears.]

...Spur, I really hope I'm doing this right...

[The gears nuzzle him a bit in reply. Or, well, something approximating nuzzling.]

I would hope this goes without saying, but just in case...

We can't give them all the devices back. It would be pure foolishness when there's still so much we can learn from them. Just the improvement to our communication technology alone would be worth declaring a few of them "lost" and continuing in secret, and that's just barely scratching the surface! They clearly have FAR more advanced technology than we do. We need to level the playing field even if they end up as our allies.

[There seems to be a bit of a scene in front of the Pokemon Habitat today. Some other teens seem to be accosting another one, who is standing with a stony expression on his face. If you move closer to the group, you might overhear the conversation; they're not exactly quiet about it.

"Hey, we should contact the authorities. Some idiot let the Murder Nerd have Pokemon, ha ha."

"Hey little Axew, how about you come be my Pokemon instead? You'll live longer. Ha ha ha ha.

Man, where'd you get this Smeargle? It's WAY too cool looking for you -- hey, the little bastard just ruined my shirt! Lousy --"

You might know the one standing by saying nothing, although he does seem to stand up for his own Pokemon here and there. When people say terrible things to HIM, however, he shuts up for some reason. Is this something you even want to get in the middle of?]

I don't think I got most of it, did I?

[Fletchinder does his version of a shrug.]

That's too bad, but I'll get another chance.

[Fletchinder begins preening his new feathers while Apollo continues filming his starter.]

I've seen Pokémon evolve before, but this is the first time that someone who I've bonded with has evolved. It never stops being incredible to watch them change. I don't think I could ever get tired of seeing it. What about everyone else? Is it the same way for you?

[A brief pause as he remembers that not everyone is like him.]

How many of you have seen a Pokémon evolve before?

[The image wobbles severely for a bit while Apollo turns off the camera.]

[Four Pokemon are playing around outside one of the houses in the Residential District. An oddly colored Smeargle is currently cheekily dotting the face of a Magnemite, while an Axew chortles nearby. A Metapod, meanwhile, has already been fully painted and seems to be quite proud of its new designs.

Meanwhile, a teenage boy with white hair watches them on the steps of his residence. A notebook is open, but he hasn't written anything in a while. Watching these Pokemon, he thinks back to how they joined him. He appreciates their companionship, but at the same time he's begun to realize something. In pretty much each case he can think of, it had been Takuro who had helped initiate the bond, not Hiroshi. Somehow, there was always a gap there, and Takuro seemed to be the one who always had to pull the two sides together. Even when he bonded with Hiroshi himself...

He's beginning to realize a fatal flaw. He doesn't really GET Pokemon, somehow.]

[VOICE ONLY]

[Yes, there's a video option now, but Hiroshi is too embarrassed by his request to use it.]

Excuse me, if I could have a moment of somebody's time? I am currently looking for someone with a great deal of experience in understanding Pokemon. I... am looking for someone to help me be a better trainer. If someone out there is willing to help out someone like me, could you let me know? ...I am sorry, I would rather not give my name before I get an offer for help. This is... not an easy thing for me to have to ask.

Thank you, and... sorry for any trouble.

[The voice that comes through sounds polite and somewhat practiced. Eiji hadn't planned on using his warp band for this sort of thing ever again but well. Ugh. He needed to bite the bullet at some point- which he did when he walked back in the gates of Union.]

[Though, suddenly he has a much more pressing question than he had originally when he started to make this broadcast.]

...I've been out of town for some time, would anyone mind telling me what happened? For that matter, does anyone need help with anything?

[It's not like he could just pretend the city wasn't in trouble. He would do what he could to help.]

Ah, and also- if it isn't too much trouble, does anyone know where someone might find a little part-time work? Thank you in advance.

[There, that should be good. He ends the feed there.]

[Action/In town.]

[Eiji is still out job hunting, and he's helping anyone he comes across, be it helping them clean up a mess or rebuilding anything the earthquakes might have damaged. He's kind of a weird looking guy, though. His clothes don't really look like anything that matches Union fashion, rather they are baggy but colorful clothes.]

[He carries with him a bag typically used for hiking, full of stuff for traveling. He looks every bit like a Trainer. The only odd thing is that there is a stick poking out of the back with a pair of colorful underwear hanging off of it. (don't worry they're clean). ]

[He's also clearly enlightened by the reptilian accents on his face and hands. On his shoulder sits a small Fletchling that titters at him every now and then.]

The scream was audible from the street. It was the sound of a soul in pain. The sound, perhaps, of a librarian who has just entered her library to check for earthquake damage and seen every damn shelf and book in a huge heap. After the scream of horror finishes, she goes on with an encore performance of a stream of creative cursing about having people fired and whipped and flogged and banished, coming to a climax of "AND IF IT DOESN'T GET PROPERLY SECURED THIS TIME I WILL DO SOMETHING SO POINTLESSLY HIDEOUS TO YOU YOU'LL DIE AS MUCH FROM SURPRISE AS YOU DO FROM THE ACTUAL INJURIES! NOW MOVE!"

Some wild wingulls fly away in alarm with the volume of the last word.

[12 hours later]

Zarvora slowly emerged from the library and set down on the steps by the front door to massage her temples. She felt a migraine coming on, but at least her staff had an organized plan for putting everything back together. This put her personal projects back by weeks, if not months, though. Her Fletchling landed on her head in concern and looked down at her face, and she couldn't help but smile a bit at that as she looked back up. "What do you think, Charles? Did I over do it a bit?"

Iron Mines:
The trip to the eastern mountains is punctuated by the continuing aftershocks. After each one, it may be tempting to glance back at Union to see if any of the towers have fallen yet. The expedition parties move with incredible speed, knowing that the fate of their City hangs on the line.

When they reach the mountains, guided by the coordinates given of the 'strange radio signal', the parties will find that many of the normal entrances and routes have been blocked by cave-ins. In contrast, however, a gaping hole has opened up where none existed before. As this seems to be the easiest way to gain access, the parties slowly lower themselves in...

They will find themselves in the long-sought iron mines.

But there are so many twisting turns and tunnels, it will be impossible to stay together and make any sort of progress. Each group will have to take their own paths from here...

Old City:
Each of the twelve entrances down into the Old City take a different meandering route through the ruins. Though several are blocked off by this time, there are still many potential paths to take. The state of the Old City is poor, being underground as it is, and occasional soft rumblings are certain to cause unease. As the report states, however, there is enough of an interval between quakes that it should be possible to investigate safely.

It would be unwise to venture down alone, but it is impossible, too, for everyone to stay together if they wish to make headway.

Union:
The wild Pokémon continue to come out of the Old City, though the frequency has been somewhat lessened. Rubble lines the streets and though no towers have collapsed as of yet, some seem to be dangerously close and certainly nobody should be staying inside of them. As stated, the towers in Sector 3 are the worse off and construction crews work frantically to attempt to restabilize the foundations of these buildings.

The injured are innumerable, the number of casualties is as of yet unknown, and the chaos and panic is difficult to fend off.

There is a great deal of work to be done.

((Please post below with your groups - in the first comment, please note the members of your group, where you are, and whether or not you intend to keep a threading order. Regardless of threading order, mods will be responding at least once every 24 hours to keep the event moving. Groups should be three to four people in size.

At this time, all characters entering the iron mines will be able to choose to bond with a free extra Pokemon listed under 'Cavern' in the Map and Wild Pokemon post. Please respond there if you intend to make use of this. Characters who have already claimed a free Old City Pokemon may not do so.))

[Among the vast group of explorers heading out to the Old City, one person who seems to be pointedly avoiding it is a relative newcomer to the Trainer business. Earthquakes? Trainers getting trapped? That just shows the Old City is bad news. ...Not that he can talk about it to anybody.

So instead, he's going to explore the easier areas just outside the city! Get out there, study some Pokemon, get some hands on experience. Yeah, that's it. Just get on out there. Right out there. Just need to take a step, and he'll be outside the gates. That's right, just one little...]

...Perhaps this is not the right time. I should go help with repairs more.

[The silver-haired teenager turns around -- only to find an Axew standing in the way, looking at him very sternly.]

What? No, Takuro, I'm not frightened. Don't be ridiculous. But we are in the middle of an emergency, and going out right now would just be self-centered of me.

[The Pokemon, if he could, would raise an eyebrow. He's definitely not letting this Trainer back in...

...which is why anybody who goes near the entrance to the Verdant Forest will see a very strange sight: A teenager, trying to get past an Axew who keeps moving to block his path. He looks... conflicted, to say the least.]
