Union?

[It was a rare day when Waver Velvet addressed the public of Union as a whole, but this day something about him seemed off. He seemed more bothered, more irritable than normal-- not that the little Nincada that was sitting on his head seemed to care. It drummed it's little feet happily on Waver's head, glad to be there for it's trainer in this strange time.

Heaving a sigh, Waver continued:]

Let's take a poll. Who here has been having weird dreams for the last couple of days? I need to know for academic reasons.

[...And, that was all. Waver scratched his cheek, feeling awkward and embarrassed about this entire problem that he was having.]

Don't worry about when you reply. I don't think I'll be getting to sleep any time soon.

[And, with that, the feed abruptly shut off.

Respond, Union?]

[The video pops up on what could be just about any average apartment. Basement by the placement of the windows, slightly gloomy maybe, and with little furniture besides a sofa, a large easy chair and some bookcases.

And that sparse furniture is in the process of tipping and falling all over the place as what looks like a hurricane roars through the small space, leaves visibly whipping and blowing all over. There's no sound except for a tune played over it all, courtesy of a certain Rotom.

A Gardevoir rolls past, looking positively outraged at what's going on. A Zorua scampers by, and quickly ducks for shelter behind the overturned sofa. Then the wizard himself slides into view, arms pinwheeling and a Pachirisu clings to his shoulder for dear life, flapping in the breeze. Mouse lunges in, teeth clamping on his trainer's shirt in an effort to keep him from blowing straight over while the wizard yells something that can't be heard over Toot's music. It works.

Until a flying book gets him right in the face and he goes right over as the music finally concludes.]

The opposing armies meet just outside the forest, the more idiosyncratic forces of Union and its allies up against fully-organized Gigan might. Wheeled transports carry many of the enemy troops while strange metal cylinders with rotating blades keeping them aloft swoop around overhead in a near parody of Flying-type Pokémon. And marching among the soldiers and their transports, unmistakable by their bulk, each wearing a metal band around their middles, are the mighty yet enslaved Gods themselves.

The clifflike bulk of Regirock.

The glacial progression of Regice.

The alien presence of Registeel.

And, dead in the center of the formation, towering over them all, the sheer presence of Regigigas, crown jewel of the Emperor’s ill-gotten forces.

There is no attempt to negotiate. No overtures first, no white flags of truce to try working this out. The Gigan army has come to fight, armed with technology. The Union army has come to defend, armed with the bonds between themselves and their Pokémon. This spirit has earned them an additional boon: blessings from the gods who favor Union, who support the humans they believe in with the hopes their comrades can still be rescued.

Thus the battle is joined.

[[ OOC: As noted, all participants in this event get to pick one stat-boosting “blessing” from the gods, just like when they defended from Sveta’s attack. Please note which blessing your character received in their first tag. Also note that Mod tags will come once every 24 hours, unless all characters in the log have replied, then they will come more frequently.]]

After weeks of waiting uneasily in the aftermath of the chaotic infiltration of Gigas to right a terrible wrong, the Council finally decided that it’s time to make a move. It's wasn't a decision that they made lightly, but the events in the distant city has proven a point that they had all seen coming:

The time where they could stay in the safety of Union's walls was no more, not when the Gods themselves were far from the infallible beings that they had believed for generations. It was time for Humans to once again take their stand. Joined by their allies from Caldera, Sanctuary, and the other surrounding cities, the people of Union Alliance gathered their supplies and set out west-- toward Gigas. The distant city had not remained silent either, rumors spreading of mobilization, and the fires of war loom as large as the four imprisoned titans over all the land.

The Gods had saved humanity countless times before. It was time that humanity returned the favor.

[OOC: Event Sign Ups are now open! We encourage all players to participate in this pivotal event. You can pick your teams of five yourselves, or you can request to be placed in a randomized pool that will be determined at the end of the sign up period, on 7/15.

An OOC post will be made explaining the next stage in more detail. Please use this post as a catch-all for your IC needs.]

The days following the failed attempt to free the Gigas' from their captivity had been rather solemn. With the citizens of Union coming to terms both with their failure and the looming threat of retaliation on Gigas' part. It's a time for preparation, for reflection....

"Aaaand, fetch!"

And it's a perfect time to head down to the park and throw a ball around. Harry tosses the ball as hard as he can and then stands back as Mouse, now quite possibly a gazillion times the size he'd been as a Lilipup goes bounding across the grass in hot pursuit. He makes it, snatching the ball up in his mouth just as the newest addition to Harry's group, a Tyrunt, comes leaping out of nowhere and tackles the enormous Stoutland, making Harry wince with a slight grin as he watches the scuffle erupt. Lash stands beside him, serene and peaceful, though not without a look of irritated disinterest on her expression.

It's his day off.

---

Later on at night, he's left the more rambunctious Pokemon at home and headed out for dinner. It's a little place he's discovered since his move to Union. Almost literally a hole in the wall, or at least a door down a flight of steps.

It's a quiet place, old, slightly dingy but cozy enough for Dresden's taste with the sounds and smells of food cooking behind the bar. It's nearly deserted too with only a few customers, the bartender, the Machamp bouncer by the door. And Dresden sitting at one table with a half-downed glass of beer beside him, scratching away at a notepad while he rubbed his chin in thought.

Closed to Rei

Of course, it's not all parks and beer. A lot of people had been involved and as time ticked on, he found himself worried about one in particular. Of his team, he didn't exactly know Haruka or Michiru very well, but the memory of seeing Rei rattled, even for a moment, kind of stuck in his brain. As such, he'd resolved to check in on her. Ice cream in hand. Because ice cream makes everything better.

He found a place that does ice cream takeout. They have a Vanillite breathe on the box before you leave. It stays frozen under a hot sun for hours.

So, another afternoon, he makes his way down to Ninetales Vale with his absolute battleship of a Stoutland by his side eagerly wagging his tail as they approach Hikawa Shrine and knock on the door.

[Maka's focus when the video opens is on her Meowstic, Stella, who seems very alert as if searching for something. The Pokemon's ears raise up slightly (but don't unfold) and her gaze shifts restlessly all around.]

This is the fourth week she's brought me out here. I have no idea what she's looking for, it's not like we're training, she's just looking for something.

[A pause while Maka turns the band onto herself, looking perplexed.]

It's kind of dumb that she can "see" things I can't despite both of us being Psychic types. What kind of Psychic type can't foresee anything, right? [Maka you're also a Fairy type and even so, you don't actually want to foresee at all.] I wish she'd tell me what we're looking for instead of just dragging me off without a single word.

[Cats, even when they're imbued with abomination powers they never change. The message ends there and Maka goes back to trying to find whatever they're after.]

As discussions branch and mount in Union about how to handle Gigas's diplomatic overtures, news of a more pleasant variety reaches the city from Glacier. Although still rebuilding from their own city's far more disastrous dragon attack, the people have banded together to host "The Thawing", their annual celebration of the coming of spring. In appreciation of all Union has done for them, all citizens of that city are invited - encouraged, even - to attend. Glacier has its own pride, after all. It would like to show its new allies what it looks like at its best.

Just...don't expect to go without a sweater or a jacket. The city may be "thawing", but that doesn't mean it's warm.

So I don't know about everybody else, but this trip to Gigas has gotten me thinking. And I don't mean about the rock-skeletons in their closet.

They're knees and shoulders above where we are in basically every single way, and to get a born-and-bred Calderan to admit that takes a lot. I get it, we've got Enlightened here on our side, but we need to get with the times. How many engineers or tech-savvy types got a glimpse of the kinds of toys they have there? That's where we need to start. If they do end up coming back against us—or worse, if that Elite Four girl decides to come back with even more friends—then we're in trouble.

I've put my suggestion out there, but I wanna hear what other people think. Come on, Union, you've gotta step up your game, or you're gonna fall behind~

WHO: Sophia and YOU! (Bring a friend if you like!)
WHAT: It's a trip to the beach! (Just watch out for that magikarp..)
WHEN: ICly Between 23rd to 26th April
WHERE: Ocean Beach, south of Union

Harry's suggestion to get some rest had been on her mind since the post-trip gathering had concluded. She'd been out of sorts since returning from Gigas, something she knew her friends had noticed, and her pokémon had made a point to dog her steps out of concern since she'd gotten home. You'd think she was prone to fainting, not that she had, or something equally embarrassing..

It didn't take her long to make up her mind on what to do - or on where to go. Once she was certain things were in order at the Ranger office, Sophia quietly packed up a tent and some supplies, along with as many broken fishing rods as she could carry, before leaving a note on her desk (and one in Waver's office) to say she'd gone south for a few days.

Even with a brief stop near Moss Rock for lunch on the way, getting down to the coast didn't take more than a couple of hours at most. It was warmer here, even with the breeze off the water, but everything was cool compared to Gigas. Pitching her tent in the forest clearing nearest to the beach, she had a great view of the ocean without risk of the waves getting too close.

Anyone looking for her during the day (or who just happened to be in the area) would likely find her down on the sand, seated on a large red blanket. Sophia herself has one leg partially folded under her, balancing a reference book on magic that Raine had lent her against the crook of her knee while quietly taking apart and putting the rods back together and untangling fishing line. A Cherrim in full flowery bloom sits atop her head, basking in the sunlight as best she can, while at her back, a little Riolu meditates, ears occasionally twitching in annoyance at the distant clash of her trainer's other Pokémon brawling nearby.

Why don't you say hello?

[Rikku has been pointedly ignoring all things Gigan related because she grew up in Sanctuary, she is not interested in anything but forgetting those meanies exist.

Besides, she has work to do, which is why today's video comes to live via a Murkrow holding her band while Rikku pokes at something on a worktable.]

So I was thinking. Is there any kind of...big Engineer union or head honcho type person or something around here that'll make getting parts and maybe commissions easier? Because I'm still pretty new here and dunno where all the good stuff is or who needs what and I've gotta find a second job soon--rebuilding won't last forever!

While Union was happy to agree to a ceasefire with Gigas and treat with them in earnest, it seems the Seekers have held some suspicions of the great Empire for awhile now. And thus, enlisting in the help of a few hand-picked Union agents, they stole into the deepest vaults of Gigas, hoping to recover items of great power and learn the truth about the city’s purported guardian gods.

The City of Gigas is unlike anything the people of Union have ever seen before. The city is immense, a sprawling metropolis that covers the land as far as the eye can see. Built up primarily around enormous centralized towers, unlike Union these towers are dark concrete buildings, covered in glass windows. The buildings seem to serve any number of functions, and have a startling variety in construction, style, and even size, creating a unique skyline that is breathtaking to behold. The city is connected with roads of asphalt, upon which whiz smoke-belching steel carriages at frightful speeds, the engines (and piercing, constant horns) creating an ever-present din that engulfs the city in loud, chaotic sound.

“Downtown,” as the Gigans know it, is a huge collection of stores, apartments, and businesses. Apparently, the larger homes are built in Calderan-style but tend to be further from the main commotion of the downtown areas, of which Gigas citizens assure Union citizens that there are several, each with their own district name and culture. The technology is quite advanced as well, full color televisions are standard in every home and built in devices so slim and with such sharp images that they seem decades ahead of Union’s own technology. Pokemon are still quite present in Gigas, many people riding flying types and the buildings having huge perches to accommodate them. As with the vehicles below, however, Gigas seems to regulate air traffic to individual lanes and the birds seem well-trained as they convey their trainers to and fro.

Humans are just that, here, Human. No unusual shapes and sizes like the Enlightened and Earthkin of the Union Alliance, and those displaying unusual traits receive odd looks. Like many civilizations to the east, Battling is a common sport though in this place it’s more like the combat arenas of old. Several stadiums dot the cityscape, the sounds of Pokemon Battles and cheering crowds echoing for blocks all around, and it’s a stadium where humans are not welcome. Unless, of course, they want to make a show and spar against a Pokemon, of course.

This is Gigas, the City of Reclamation. Union civilians have free rein to explore this grand city as councillors are invited into the massive capitol building to negotiate with the Gigan leaders. Gigas civilians, for their part, are polite, friendly even. While many of them are caught in the bustle of their daily lives they regard Union citizens with interest and curiosity, willing to talk about their city, extolling its virtues while complaining about the noise, the crowds, the lines, and the expense all the while. One thing is clear though, the people of Gigas are proud of their city and their accomplishments. This is their home, and they are eager to show it off to the world.

[There's a lot of shrill squawking in the background, one obviously from a bird... but one that has way too good a set of lungs to be a Torchic anymore. Adell appears in the feed a second after activating his band.]

...Hey, everyone. So, did anyone else get out to Citadel for the sports events? They were pretty fun, and there was a ton of great competition. I...

[Yep, there's still plenty of squawking going on, and Adell's eyebrow twitches.]

Andy! Knock it off!

[Suffice it to say, that didn't do much, with his Combusken companion still throwing a fit.]

...Never mind. I'm going to take Andy out for a spar. [He sighs.] ...Did anyone else's Pokemon get a major attitude problem when they evolved?

[Action]

[In an open field right by Union, there are loud cries from a Pokemon and grunts of effort from a human. A Combusken leapt into the air and delivered a flurry of kicks at the human, who deftly blocked many of its attacks. The Pokemon followed up with a burst of flame from its mouth, but the human behind it looked largely unfazed by it.]

That all you got, Andy?! You can do better than that! I know you're stronger than that! Don't hold back this time!

[The Combusken screeched again, and repeated the same barrage, though with more ferocity. This time, though, the barrage of kicks managed to knock Adell off balance and forced him to stumble back a bit before being blasted with another Ember attack.

Still, through all of it, Adell didn't even look much hurt by it. No, in fact, he smiled.]

Good! Man, you really have improved. But are you happy now that you got some exercise? [The Combusken replied with a shorter chirp, quieter this time than the hellish shrieking it had been using during the fight.] I'm glad. You keep this up. It's good to have a partner like you.

[Wrapping up the training, Adell sat down in the field and sighed, looking up to the late afternoon sky. He looks approachable now, though perhaps a little tired.]

Everyone's probably seen the ad at some point or another. It's been in the newspapers for around about a year now and passed around here and there on business cards. Small, unassuming but the subject of a few mumbles among people who actually notice it. And who can blame them, while the format isn't exactly an attention grabber the content is probably unusual enough. A simple address beneath a block of plain, boring text.

HARRY DRESDEN - WIZARD AND PRIVATE DETECTIVE
Lost Items Found. Paranormal Investigations. Consulting. Advice. Reasonable Rates.
No Love Potions, Endless Purses, Parties or Other Entertainment

The address points to a simple office on the third floor of a building in Union's business district. A frosted glass window on the door proudly displays the same name and title as the ad. Anybody venturing inside will find a musky old office containing little more than a worn old desk with a few equally worn chairs in front of a small window with a wonderful view of the brick wall next door, a couple of filing cabinets and a couch against one wall that looks very much like it had been dragged off a curb somewhere. A ceiling fan squeaks obnoxiously overhead.

More important is probably the tall man stretched out on that couch. One hand dangling off the side next to an empty coffee cup resting on its side and a magazine over his face muffling his snoring. A Lillipup snoozes away curled up on his chest.

... Business is slow.

B.

There's a man wandering around the streets of Union. A very, very tall man in a long black leather duster and otherwise plain clothes and sneakers. Mouse the Lillipup trots along at his side as he weaves and wanders his way through the streets.

It's a pretty strange sight as the man doesn't seem to have any idea where the heck he's going. Just kind of weaving around randomly on the streets and sidewalks, even doubling back and looping around here and there. Is he blind? Maybe. That'd certainly explain the tinted glasses he's wearing despite the sun beginning to dip over the horizon.

Maybe he's just piss drunk.

Blind or not, he's not particularly watching where he's going so you'd better watch out if you cross his path unless you want to get run over. Or you can stop him if you're feeling more curious.

Are there any other warp band users who are bonded with a Porygon?

I could use some advice, and the information I've accessed on the species doesn't really answer any of my questions.

I've had one with me for just over a month or so now, and I'd thought we were getting along quite well. But recently [since their trip to Refuge] it's been quite absorbed with the warp band network, and as of this week no longer responds to the name we'd agreed on when we first met..

[her tone is calm, but there's a hint of concern there that might be audible if you've gotten to know Sophia at all]

Is that typical behaviour? Or should I be worried about it? It doesn't seem unhappy..and it's not outright ignoring me otherwise.

[Someone has been hard at work since returning from Glacier.]

[Or at least, trying to be. Space wasn't really the issue. He'd found a small room and with permission, set it up as a temporary dark room. He really needed to just rent out a studio but for now, being as he was still settling after the Oakenshield residence went up for sale, this would work for what he needed it.]

[He had some pretty important pictures to develop. It's too bad the place covered in huge, extroverted pokemon made that really difficult.]

[About the sixth time someone tried to open the door (Three or four times with it still being locked somehow) Hayato just set out his two biggest pokemon to guard the door while he worked.]

[Feel free to still try to bug him. Nikon is kind of a pushover and Fuji is really easily distracted. He could probably use an interruption.]

[When the video clicks on. Hayato can be seen with a bright grin. He's wearing a work apron and a pair of goggles on his head- his usual for working on photos. As such his antennae are visible for once instead of being crammed under a hat. They flick and twitch with his expressions.]

So it looks like everyone had a pretty good trip. We made out okay even if I've gotta be kind of hush hush about the details, but what about everyone else? Got anything fun to share?

[It looks like he's about to say something else when there's the distinct sound of a door opening and a creaking of hinges. He jolts, antennae flicking straight up and he turns towards the hall he was standing near.]

Oi!

[Someone tried to go in the dark room again. The feed ends as he's running towards the source.]

WHO: Sophia and YOU!
WHAT: As the repairs continue, life gets back to normal in Union - for a given value of normal.
WHEN: Any time in March.
WHERE: In and around Union.

The Ranger Headquarters were spared of some of the worst damage during the attack. However, that did not mean it went completely unscathed. The damage to the building was superficial, there just happened to be a lot of it, and the quakes caused by collapsing towers and Kyurem himself had meant that there had been a lot of clean up, furniture replacement and reorganizing inside and out.

After the visit to the underground ruins near Refuge, Sophia picked right up where she left off with reorganizing the Third division's stores while Yuuna was away, the division's captain off on a ranger assignment of her own. As the Third didn't have an official quartermaster yet, she'd stepped in to manage things while making use of the room available here. Hence why you'll find her here most days, sorting out requisitions for equipment in the mornings until midday, and handing over paperwork to Waver to file in the late afternoons.

It isn't the only place Sophia's been hanging out lately, of course. Around town she's often in and out of the market on work business, though she does like to stop by a café for a bite to eat in the mornings. She's also started popping up now and again over in the industrial district, lodging work requests with suitable engineers for replacement pieces needed by the rangers, and, sometimes, just to chat about the work. Her doublade companion is a constant at these times, Ymir glaring at anyone who comes too close whether they be friend or foe.

If she's not in town, she may instead be found outside the walls - only occasionally, however, with both Elhaz the Ivysaur and Ymir in tow. She doesn't hang about the camps set up for the allied forces: instead, she'll be found further in the forest, closer to the Shrine, where the peace and quiet and greenery make for a safe place to practice with her powers without attracting too much attention....probably.

A month or two ago, a few very formal letters were exchanged between the University of Union and some very prestigious schools and universities of magic in Sanctuary. Deals had been made, a sum of money had been exchanged, papers had been signed, and hands had been shook. Now, with the small but slowly growing number of young mages Union, it was time for institutes of education to see to their training and upbringing. Today, the University of Union was celebrating the opening of their brand new department official studies with a modest banquet.

Several mages had come from Sanctuary. They all wore red robes, carried long staves, and were topped by pointy hats. The were old relatively old (a casual observer would be surprised if any of them was under 50, and most looked significantly older) and they all had the well fed frames of people who had never known hunger or poverty. Their leader1 was a gentleman by the name of Mustrum Ridcully.

After speeches, photographs, and the rather substantial meal2 it was time for after dinner drinks, and an excellent time for any of you who frequent the events of Union's upper crust to hobnob with the good ol' UU's newest staff, and possibly also the man holding it as well.

[Video, and all at high volume]

Hello? Is this thing on? Can they hear me?

[a voice from somewhere off screen assured him it was. A servant or something, perhaps.]

It better be or I'm going to feel awfully foolish...

I say, good morrow to you all, people of Union! I am Mustrum Ridcully, and I am the head of your fine University's new department of of magical studies! Hopefully you're all ready to come contemplate the mysteries of the inner workings of the cosmos with us!

I've got one mystery to contemplate right now that just can't wait: Where's the best fly fishing around here?

***

1Identifiable by being the tallest, having the most magnificent robes, and being the one shaking hands with the university's chairman.

2All mages are able to put away an impressive amount of food. They get lots of practice at it, as most major events invite them simply out of fear of what might happen if they anger the magic community3

3You know the old saying, after all: "Meddle not in the affairs of wizards, for they are not subtle at all, and quick to anger."
