Descent into Darkness

As the characters arrive, they will find what appears to be a rather deep cavern. Upon entering, the caverns are quite narrow, with twists and turns everywhere and different tunnels that all seem to be interconnected. As characters travel deeper within the caverns, reality around them will start to warp, they will start to see and hear things that aren’t necessarily there - images of old enemies, past failures, voices of condemnation, visions that strike at the soul and core of the characters. Once this begins, it will only increase in power and volume, demanding it be confronted, lest they be trapped within these caves forever.

[OOC: This event will run for a week. All characters who enter the caves will be subject to some of their deepest fears, darkest demons, and most abject failures. To overcome them, characters must help each other out, finding their purpose through strength of character and resolve to move forward. In general, these visions should require characters to come to grips with themselves. Illusory images and voices can and will appear and can take any number of forms, depending on what is most appropriate to a character. Additionally, characters may thread with each other and are encouraged to help each other out to overcome these personal demons. For those who wish to take part, they are able and encouraged to narrate their own personal demons, which will be on display for everyone who enters their thread. IC threads may be made in this post.]

[Well. It took him three seconds to figure out what nightmare he stumbled into. Mostly because it was a memory and it was something he'd about from his best friend. Man, he sure didn't miss how stuffy her parents were. Bluh.]

[It's not until he phases through the wall into her bedroom that he realizes he's changed to mirror the setting of the illusion. Wow. That was. Alarming.]

What the frick?

[That sure was slang vulgarities out of a ten-year-old's voice.]

[ Seeing him there as a child didn't help her perception of reality. Standing up quickly, she shushed him, trying to push him back through the door he came in from. ]

You shouldn't be here! What if my father finds you?!

[skdjls whoa no he is not getting shoved back through. He goes entirely intangible so she probably goes right through him and comes in the rest of the way. Sorry Lux.]

Its okay. If he comes I'll just disappear!

[It was weird, he knew this wasn't real, but it was hard to think otherwise.]

[ And pass through him she did, nearly colliding with a wall (which very likely was a cave wall in disguise). She turns around with a huffed sigh. ]

But what if he comes in suddenly? He'll send you away, and I may never see you again...

[Oops.]

[To that, though, he just scoffs.]

He's not my Dad! He can't tell me what to do! I'll just come back.

If he finds out that someone is haunting this place, he may send an exorcist. Then you may really be in trouble.

[ Does that even work on people? She doesn't know. She plops back down, frowning a bit. ]

Seeing you is the only thing I look forward to these days...

Nu-uh. Those won't work on me. [Will it? He didn't know. He should ask Maya. She knows things.]

...Whoa.

[He frowns because that was a thing she just said. He walks over to her and sits down on the floor in front of her.]

I mean- I like coming to see you too, but. What happened? Is your Dad being that mean?

[ She rests her head on her knees. ]

My father formally announced my engagement. I will be marrying Fai Flourite when I come of age.

[ You know, that gangly guy that was around the estate from time to time? Usually with his twin brother. ]

[What. His eyebrows go up. And then- huh. Something was odd about that, too? He already knew that? Did he? Weird. He shakes it off.]

He's making you get married? That's dumb! Do you even like him?

He...

[ Lux pauses, thinking for a moment. He wasn't a terrible person, and she didn't dislike him. But like him? Love him?

She sat there for a moment. ]

He will treat me well, I think.

[The deepest ten-year-old frown.]

You ...They're not giving you a choice, are they, Lux?

[ She takes a deep breath, burrowing her face into her knees. ]

[He springs to his feet.]

That's stupid! Marriage is a big deal! They can't just make you get married to some chump you barely know! You're like, ten-years-old!

[He's ...pacing in anger a little. Like an angry puppy. He stops after a moment and then just walks up to her, holding out his hand.]

Let's get out of here.

[ She looks up. ]

Ten and a half if you want to be precise.

[ Because yes she keeps track of these things. Lux looks down at his hand, then back up at John. Her eyes are wide. ]

Now? But... but how? There are guards everywhere!

I'll distract them with my spookiness. Point is, if you don't want to be here, you shouldn't have to be.

[And he might be implying more than just sneaking out for the night with that statement.]

[ She looks uncertain. ]

...Both of us could get in a lot of trouble, John. My father may send you away for good this time. Besides, you know I always get caught sooner or later.

So ...don't let him take you back. He can't make you go anywhere you don't want to go. He's your dad but he's not the boss of your life. You are.

[He smiles a bit.]

Lemme tell you a story I learned from my Dad about my Nanna. I don't think I ever told you about her except for how cool she was.

But... but he is my father, John.

[ As if "dad" and "father" meant two entirely different things to her, which they very much did.

Lux blinks a few times, shaking her head a bit. ]

You have not.

Well- and you can't laugh- but my family used to be noble, too! It was a really long time ago. Nanna and her brother were adopted by these old nobles. From what I remember her dad was pretty nice, but her mother was this really mean lady. When her dad died, the mean old lady put Nanna through all this crazy training to be a perfect noble. It was terrible from what Dad tells me.

Anyway, she did it. She beat the lady at everything she threw at her. When she finally kicked it, Nanna got the inheritance and...

[And he raises his hands for dramatic effect.]

Threw it all to charity! She moved to the Vale and said bye.

[He pauses.]

I mean- I definitely don't want you to put up with this until you can take over your family or anything but. Being a noble doesn't mean you have to do what they tell you.

[ She doesn't laugh at all, but instead leans toward him a bit, a look of wonder on her face. ]

They were?

[ She hangs on his every word--as she tended to anyway, when it came to this sort of thing. She was a sucker for the dramatic. ]

That... I wish I could meet her. She sounds like an amazing lady. She sounds very brave. I know where you must get it from now.

Heh. Yeah, me too.

[And then he blusters a little at being called brave.]

I don't think I'm brave I just get mad when people do dumb things. Like with your dad. Anyway, if Nanna could leave I think you can to. I don't think you're any less brave than she was.

[ Lux looks down, giving this idea a bit of thought. ]

If you think I can...

And if he tries to bring me back here? What should I do?

Stomp on his foot and tell him he's not the boss of you! And then maybe run away.

[He nods. Sound 10-year-old advice.]

And if you want, I can help you stomp on his foot or help you run away.
