Arrival in Gigas

The City of Gigas is unlike anything the people of Union have ever seen before. The city is immense, a sprawling metropolis that covers the land as far as the eye can see. Built up primarily around enormous centralized towers, unlike Union these towers are dark concrete buildings, covered in glass windows. The buildings seem to serve any number of functions, and have a startling variety in construction, style, and even size, creating a unique skyline that is breathtaking to behold. The city is connected with roads of asphalt, upon which whiz smoke-belching steel carriages at frightful speeds, the engines (and piercing, constant horns) creating an ever-present din that engulfs the city in loud, chaotic sound.

“Downtown,” as the Gigans know it, is a huge collection of stores, apartments, and businesses. Apparently, the larger homes are built in Calderan-style but tend to be further from the main commotion of the downtown areas, of which Gigas citizens assure Union citizens that there are several, each with their own district name and culture. The technology is quite advanced as well, full color televisions are standard in every home and built in devices so slim and with such sharp images that they seem decades ahead of Union’s own technology. Pokemon are still quite present in Gigas, many people riding flying types and the buildings having huge perches to accommodate them. As with the vehicles below, however, Gigas seems to regulate air traffic to individual lanes and the birds seem well-trained as they convey their trainers to and fro.

Humans are just that, here, Human. No unusual shapes and sizes like the Enlightened and Earthkin of the Union Alliance, and those displaying unusual traits receive odd looks. Like many civilizations to the east, Battling is a common sport though in this place it’s more like the combat arenas of old. Several stadiums dot the cityscape, the sounds of Pokemon Battles and cheering crowds echoing for blocks all around, and it’s a stadium where humans are not welcome. Unless, of course, they want to make a show and spar against a Pokemon, of course.

This is Gigas, the City of Reclamation. Union civilians have free rein to explore this grand city as councillors are invited into the massive capitol building to negotiate with the Gigan leaders. Gigas civilians, for their part, are polite, friendly even. While many of them are caught in the bustle of their daily lives they regard Union citizens with interest and curiosity, willing to talk about their city, extolling its virtues while complaining about the noise, the crowds, the lines, and the expense all the while. One thing is clear though, the people of Gigas are proud of their city and their accomplishments. This is their home, and they are eager to show it off to the world.

"They're rivals or something. They have some dialogue before the fight but it's kinda trashy so I haven't been paying attention. The game is pretty much just the fighting."

Crossing her arms, Lux's brows furrowed in contemplation. So it was like a movie that he could control with that strange stick thing? "Huh."

She paused; "Can I try?"

"Sure. Did you want to go against me or just the computer?"

"The computer can play too?" She looks genuinely surprised by this fact.

"Yeah, it's a pretty interesting bit of programming. They even have different difficulties you can pick from. I'm playing by myself, but I guess this game is really intended to be played against other people, the computer is just something to practice against."

[rememberher]

She... kind of followed. Honestly, sometimes when he babbled about machines, she just turned off. "But you probably aren't as good as a computer, right? I'll play against you."

"Right."

He caught that, don't think he didn't.

"Here, put four of these in the slot down there and hit the button here. The controls are listed, basically you have punches and kicks in "weak", "strong," and "fierce" variety, combinations of directions and buttons let you do super moves, which are listed next to the character's portrait at the bottom of the screen. Hold back to block, or down and back to block a low attack."

She meant nothing ill by it, at least as far as she was concerned.

Listening to his instructions, Lux nodded, looking down at the controls as he gestured toward them. "This sounds complicated," She remarked idly, a hand curled at her lips.

"It's pretty complicated, yeah. You can do a lot with it, but I've never seen this much effort put into a game before. Want me to get you in?"

After a moment, Lux nodded. She could just figure it out as she went, right? "I want to try."

[indy_wannabe]

"Sure."

He puts four coins into the slot and hits a button, interrupting his current game with a "A new challenger has joined the battle!" icon.

"Pick whatever character you want. Fair warning the girl designs are...

interesting."

After a moment of scrolling through the various portraits—

"Clearly these game makers don't understand how armor works!"

A few more moments—

"But—but clothing doesn't work like that! How?"

"Probably drawn by a bunch of guys."

[rememberher]

Lux huffed in dissatisfaction. "Ones with no knowledge of anatomy."

Finally choosing one of the cuter, less offensive designed characters that she could find, she loaded into the level. Okay, weak attack, strong atta—"Hey! He just hit me!" Hadn't you ever heard of fighting fair, computer?!

It's just a computer, it just does what it's programmed to do. Just fight back!

[ That was easier said than done, the computer had years(?) of practice and programing on its side. Still, after a few matches, she seems to be getting the hang of it. In fact, Lux appears to have figured out a number of interesting-looking combos. ]
