bravenewworld | Arrival in Gigas

The City of Gigas is unlike anything the people of Union have ever seen before. The city is immense, a sprawling metropolis that covers the land as far as the eye can see. Built up primarily around enormous centralized towers, unlike Union these towers are dark concrete buildings, covered in glass windows. The buildings seem to serve any number of functions, and have a startling variety in construction, style, and even size, creating a unique skyline that is breathtaking to behold. The city is connected with roads of asphalt, upon which whiz smoke-belching steel carriages at frightful speeds, the engines (and piercing, constant horns) creating an ever-present din that engulfs the city in loud, chaotic sound.

“Downtown,” as the Gigans know it, is a huge collection of stores, apartments, and businesses. Apparently, the larger homes are built in Calderan-style but tend to be further from the main commotion of the downtown areas, of which Gigas citizens assure Union citizens that there are several, each with their own district name and culture. The technology is quite advanced as well, full color televisions are standard in every home and built in devices so slim and with such sharp images that they seem decades ahead of Union’s own technology. Pokemon are still quite present in Gigas, many people riding flying types and the buildings having huge perches to accommodate them. As with the vehicles below, however, Gigas seems to regulate air traffic to individual lanes and the birds seem well-trained as they convey their trainers to and fro.

Humans are just that, here, Human. No unusual shapes and sizes like the Enlightened and Earthkin of the Union Alliance, and those displaying unusual traits receive odd looks. Like many civilizations to the east, Battling is a common sport though in this place it’s more like the combat arenas of old. Several stadiums dot the cityscape, the sounds of Pokemon Battles and cheering crowds echoing for blocks all around, and it’s a stadium where humans are not welcome. Unless, of course, they want to make a show and spar against a Pokemon, of course.

This is Gigas, the City of Reclamation. Union civilians have free rein to explore this grand city as councillors are invited into the massive capitol building to negotiate with the Gigan leaders. Gigas civilians, for their part, are polite, friendly even. While many of them are caught in the bustle of their daily lives they regard Union citizens with interest and curiosity, willing to talk about their city, extolling its virtues while complaining about the noise, the crowds, the lines, and the expense all the while. One thing is clear though, the people of Gigas are proud of their city and their accomplishments. This is their home, and they are eager to show it off to the world.

[His feet were killing him after all of the travelling by foot that they had done to make it to Gigas, and the further walking around the city that had commenced upon arrival. Everything in this city was far greater than he had ever imagined-- but he was tired.

It was his concerns over Hayato that kept him close to the photographer. Nero, he was fairly sure, would be able to contain herself or at least focus on a primary goal, but he had seen Hayato's antsyness whenever Gigas entered into the equation before.

That, and Hayato's habit of finding trouble could prove problematic. It was best to have a healer on hand...even if that meant Waver took the couch.

He didn't mind, really. In some ways, he was starting to prefer sleeping in a couch over an actual bed.]

It's a pity that the Warp Signal doesn't come out this far, [he commented after Hayato finished his lecture to what he had managed to bring along of his team.] We're going to need to make the return trip on foot again, aren't we?

[While the pokemon flitted about (For as well as Nikon could anyway, the hulking thing she was) Hayato sighed and slid Waver something of a resigned and exasperated look.]

Unless we can come together and bribe a few traveling merchants with our pocket lint and good looks.

[A joke, that pretty much meant "Yes".]

Ugh. I think I'm gonna die before I make it back to Union.

[He rolled over and buried his head in his pillow, not looking forward to making that hike on foot again. A lifetime in libraries had left him ill prepared for hikes of this calibur...]

Ehhh, you could always ride on Nikon. I'm sure she wouldn't mind.

[She nods! Yes!]

You'd have to put up with Goro, though.

[Who ....might actually be a pokemon version of Waver.]

...Only if its not an imposition...

[He didn't entirely feel comfortable hitching rides on pokemon that weren't on his team unless he was very good friends with the trainer. It seemed rude.]

[He leans back to look at Nikon, a questioning expression on his face.]

Gron!

[He looks back at Waver.]

She seems pretty okay with it.

As long as it's not a problem, then...

[And he sighed in relief; he hadn't been looking forward to making that trip.]

Thanks Hayato, Nikon. That's really, really nice of you.

No worries. You put up with me enough as it is. Nikon is also used to carting me around and I'll wager I'm a lot heavier than you are.

[A wink!]

So, did you find anything good today?

[With Hayato being a Steel Type, there was no doubt that he was heavier than the weedy Magus. The joke was enough to leave Waver flustered...but the question was a welcome tangent.]

The museums here are really neat, and I've managed to get a hold of some transit maps if you wanted to take a look at them for yourself. There's lots of ideas we may be able to incorporate into Union while we're rebuilding without deviating too far off of the original plans.

Museums, huh? I bet. [Though he suspects he wouldn't have a lot of fun in the historical ones without being snide and laughing, depending on how they decided to depict a few things.]

[The transit maps though, they catch his attention.]

The vehicles here are really something. I have a sneaking suspicion they aren't all run by rotoms.

[He faintly recalls a certain calderan scientist yelling about engines running off explosions and how ridiculous it all sounded.]

I bought a camera.

[Surprising literally no one.]

There's too much noise and smoke for them to be run by Rotoms.

[Waver heaved a tired sigh, recalling the clouds of black smoke that the metal carriages belched into the air as they traversed their roadways.

But he cast Hayato an inquiring look.]

Don't you already have enough cameras to take up a closet for your darkroom?

[He gives him a mock offended expression.]

One can never have too many cameras.

[But he waves a hand.]

I'll save you the spiel but the cameras here are out of this world. I'm taking it home so I can take it apart to figure out how it works.

[Go ahead, be offended. The Skitty will find your films and shred them.]

Not a bad idea-- I ought to see if I've any funds left before we leave to pick up a trinket to play with. You'll share the details with the class, right?

Of course. I'm not letting Gigas keep these sorts of things all to themselves. Once we get it home, I have no doubt we can make it better.

[Typical indeed. Not even thinking things through...]

We don't even have colored Warp Bands yet-- I don't think we've got the tech that can read these cameras.

We won't know until we try. Besides the people of Union are surprisingly resourceful. I don't doubt that something can be figured out.

[Don't be mad, Hayato-- he's just the sort who has to mention the possible problems so someone doesn't get their hopes up.]

I know, just don't go thinking that it's going to be anything quick, okay? We've got to get the infrastructure in place first.
