Springtime for Union

After an unusually long and cold winter, the land is finally beginning to stir in the anticipation of spring. In the forest, the first flowers are beginning to peek out of the ground, the hum of Bug Pokémon begin to be heard, and of course, the first wisps of pollen begin to incite misery amongst the more sensitive of the population. The sun sets later and later each night, and at the end of a long workday, the prospect of escaping early to enjoy a stroll out in the brisk spring air becomes more and more enticing.

The pall cast by Team Evolution has long faded into little more than a distant cloud on the horizon. Though the mystery of 'Mega Evolution' remains unsolved, it seems inconsequential in the face of the strength that Union itself is gaining. All damage from the earthquakes has finally been fully repaired, production of iron and steel has been greatly enhanced by the discovery of the mine, there were plans to build a new port and to enhance the range of the Signal Tower, Enlightened and Pokémon everywhere were evolving one after another... On the whole, morale was high.

The city takes it upon itself to reflect this.

When the people of Union begin to stir early one spring morning, they will awaken to discover a cheerful city, indeed. All of Union, overnight, has become covered with vines and shrubs and flowers - plant life, everywhere the eye could see. Though the majority haven't yet begun to flower, the rainbow assortment of buds promises a lovely sight to come in the near future. A few citizens, annoyed, set to work removing the intrusive flora from their properties, but the majority simply take the unusual sight for what it is.

And for the particularly observant, dotted here and there among the landscape, the occasional large pink blossom can be spotted already in full bloom...

[ He looks around, one hand in his pocket and the other holding his notebook. ] It's not that boring. This is just... over-extravagant.

Over-extravagant for a grass pokémon, you think?

... probably not. [ He'll admit that, however sullenly it is. ] I already have Saur - though I guess it would be prudent to spend some time observing a pure grass type, as opposed to a grass/poison type.

I mean. [ He glances at her, then coughs a little. ] It would make sense.

[ You're not worried about looking like a nerd around Blue, are you? Who thinks about what he says. ]

Hmm, a pure grass type... [ She's not actually sure she knows any... oh. ] Have you heard about the area they found in the forest recently? Maybe there's some there. I know they've found some new pokémon around the site.

[ His eyes don't quite light up, but they do get wider - and that's about the same thing, in Green-speak. ] Well. Let's go there, then.

Right now? [ she laughs. ] We're going to have to find the way first. I don't know where it is!

Please. [ He's dismissively waving his hand at you, Blue. ] You're in the company of the world's best pokémon researcher. [ Researcher, to-be researcher... whatever. ] It can't be that hard.

Oh, well! I'm surprised it hasn't been discovered yet in that case.

[ mister super professional researcher. ]

I can't do everything. Got to give the incompetent people a chance too. [ He runs a hand through his hair, possibly preening just a little. ]

I'm sure they're very thankful for your consideration! And now they can take all your lovely credit.

But as long as we both know who would've been first, hm?

That's all that matters. [ He finishes, nodding. Even if she's dumb and whatever and huff puff, it's nice to have someone around who understands. ]

[ Blue is the most understanding person of all. ]

But when you do decide to discover a place, name it after me, okay? [ hmmm! ] Maybe... Blue mountain? Mt. Blue? Or... Blue Rock? Oh, I like Blue Rock.

Why would I do that? [ His deadpan is perfect. Probably because he's actually serious. ] That doesn't make sense.

Yes it does! Naming places after people you like - I'm sure that do that somewhere.

[ You already think she's weird and dumb and silly and stupid, Green. Why not roll with it, in her mind. ]

No. [ He slants her a look. ] Why would I name it after you instead of me?

... Because a Green Rock is just a moss rock. It wouldn't stand out at all.

I'll find another word besides rock. Nothing for you to worry about. [ He shrugs, looking ahead again. ]

Green stone. [ Said all cool-like. It's amusing to her. ]

There. That works. Though discovering areas really isn't as important as researching the actual pokémon in the region.

Leave it to the rangers and the wandering trainers to discover the locations so the people like you can go and learn what they're really all about - is that it?

Yeah. Anyway, I don't need to name any place after me. That's not how I'm going to make it into the history books.

Hmm. What is it going to be for you then? Discovering a new pokémon? A new evolution?

-- Um.

Yes, actually. [ He lifts a shoulder in an awkward sort of shrug. ] I... want to study evolution. There's a lot we don't know.

That would be useful - pokémon evolve in different ways... like nidorino needing stones, and then some stones working on eevees. [ She only looks briefly to the pokémon with them, but keeps her head forward. She hums. ]

Some of the new pokémon they found seem to be evolutions of eevee. You should check the network some time and see a few of the posts. Maybe you could still speak to them about what they saw.

Exactly. [ He makes a sour face at the prospect of actually talking to people, though. Independent research is so much better, Blue. ] I'll... see about that.
