Who: Fili and Kili
What: Going into the caves was a massive mistake and now Fili's an emotional mess
When: July 24
Not only had been braving the caves a step in the completely wrong direction, the emotional trauma it had caused had left Fili shaking and unusually clingy. It had taken quite the effort for Thorin to convince him that it wasn't real and to leave the body that looked, felt, and smelled like Kili behind. He couldn't get his mother's words out of his head, how he'd abandoned his brother before, that he was a horrible brother that couldn't take care of his family...
It may not have been real, but Fili's having a hard time shaking the doubt and unease. Coming home to be welcomed by Fleur and Keil helps, but it's not enough to throw it off completely. Claiming he wants an early night's sleep, Fili manages to slip off on his own and wait in Kili's room, staring at a wall and hugging Kili's pillow.
It's harder to convince himself that the body wasn't really his brother's when Kili is still nowhere to be found.

Needless to say, he went home to wait for him--and of course they'd get back after he stepped out to go buy dinner from one of the food stalls nearby. He goes up to his room to wait, stopping when he sees Fili.
"I'm a dumbass."

Fili surges to his feet as soon as he sees his brother, crossing the room in two quick steps to pull him into a tight hug. This is him, the real Kili, alive and breathing and sheepish, smelling like he hasn't taken a bath in at least a week and Fili can't even bring himself to care because it's Kili.
Not that Fili smells (or looks) like a basket of roses. He hasn't bathed yet after his week underground, and there's dust and dirt so thick in his hair it's nearly changed the color. Not to mention the dried blood on his clothes and hands. Some of it flakes off his cheek and falls and Fili doesn't care.
He's crying again, he realizes, quiet but enough to make him shake and press his face into Kili's shoulder.

Kili lets the bag with dinner fall to the floor and clings to his brother. He doesn't know what went on, but he knows it was bad.
"Sorry for running off again, Fee," he murmurs. "You can kick me if you want."

What had happened down there?

He's trying to keep his mind off it.

"I think they think we're filthy."

"They're not wrong. Hi Raz." He grins at the 'Mon.

"She knows I'm Rock type, right?"

He doesn't even have to fake the yawn that comes after his words.

"Sure, don't tell me. I'm just the annoying baby of the family anyway, can't do anything right, no one ever wants to tell me shit."
