1st Star [Video]

[After visiting the council and seeking permission to stay in Union City, Renko was more than pleased with their answer. They'd even given her one of those Warp Band devices she'd seen most people around the city wear. Needless to say, she looks thrilled once she gets it all figured out and starts recording.]

Hey, this thing isn't as hard to figure out as I thought it would be! That's great!

So it's pretty obvious that I'm not from around here. That aside, my name's Renko Usami, and I've decided to stay here! It's quite a bit different than what I'm used to in most ways.

[She pauses for a moment, debating what to say next, all the while counting the seconds away in her head. She needed to make a good impression on these people. She hoped she was doing a good job.]

I'd really like to learn more about all of you. Your stories, culture, technology, any of it, really. Is there a library I can check out? Other than that, any advice at all would be appreciated, especially with exploring some of the areas outside the city. It didn't seem so bad on the way here, but I was in a group then. I'm guessing going solo would be a very different experience.

Anyway, that's it for now. Thank you for allowing me to stay in your city.

[Renko laughs a bit, attempting to make light of the situation. While she didn't think anyone would directly try to harm her, she was still somewhat worried. Blue's question was a good distraction, though.]

Honestly? It's not that different outside of the city. The biggest difference I've noticed is that the Pokémon here seem to be bolder.

Yeah? [That has her curious.] How so?

They don't seem to be afraid of you.

I hope not. [Though she understands what that implies for Gigas. Another thought takes her mind.]

Oh! Since you have a warp band now, will you be using our method of bonding with pokémon from now on?

I will, actually. My three are already attuned. Bonding with them through these devices was quite an interesting experience, and I look forward to testing it out on a variety of other Pokémon.

Then I guess you plan to go out and around the Union? How confident do you feel doing that?

It's pretty exciting, actually! I didn't get to do all that much exploring while I was with the Team. Do you have any suggestions on the best places to explore?

The forest surrounding the Union is always a good place to start. You'll be near to help if you need it, and there's plenty of pokémon to study and bond with. You can upgrade to the surrounding areas the more confident you become.

I've seen a good portion of the northern forest. Is there a lot of variation depending on which side of the city you're on? Or better yet, is there some kind of record as to what Pokémon have been discovered and where they might be located?

I can honestly see something like that being of great use to everyone.

There's the books in the library that talks about it, though you won't find anything about the shrines in them.

I think I heard that somebody wanted to put together a more readily available information index for everybody... but I don't remember too well. You'll have to ask somebody about that. Maybe I'm wrong?

[And here they've walked into the shopping district, where buildings gather with signs outside detailing their trades in few words and more people walk around outside. Blue pauses for a second, then points over to a certain building.]

There. That's where you can get all your medicines for your pokémon.

[With the busier movements of people, Blue scoops up her squirtle into her arms, who was standing still and unsure how of to move.] You're coming up here for now.

I'll have to look into that! If no one's started working on a project like that, I could see what I could do to get it going.

[Renko follows closely, taking note of all the buildings and their locations. Literally. Every time she spotted something of particular interest, she'd shift her Solosis to the crook of her elbow so she could jot things down in her notebook.]

Wonderful. While I don't hope I'll need medicine for them often, it's best to be prepared, right?

Yep. Especially when you're going into the further out places. You and your pokémon won't always be ready for what you find.

[Blue enters the building, holding the door for Renko to come in with her. There's a look spared for Renko's notebook before she goes to a row to look at the selection.]

You said you've been taking down notes of everything, right? I'm just the same, actually... I've spent ages around the forest just watching and seeing what's there and jotting it down, I've only started to mind my mind into expanding off into different locations.

[She laughs a little, softly.] I wanted to bond with every pokémon I saw before I started, but I've only bonded with three wild types.

Another reason why some sort of database would be incredibly useful! It would allow people to see what they can expect in a certain region and prepare beforehand.

[Renko enters the building, giving a nod of appreciation when the other girl holds the door open for her.]

Yes, this isn't the first notebook I've filled up since I left home. There's been so much to see and learn.

That sounds pretty ambitious. Only one of mine was in the wild.

It was more of a feeling than a goal... but I wouldn't mind if I did bond with that many! [She giggles and looks at the products, picking up a salve from the shelf.]

But you can bond rather easily with some of the creatures in the forest. I think they must be warmed to us by now... oh! But you asked me about variation, didn't you? There's some differences from what I've seen. A lot of similar types, but there's difference. Especially in the Scorched Forest.

It would be an incredible feat if someone were to manage to bond with all of them, I would think.

[Renko browses the shelves as well, although she seems to be paying more attention to Blue. Gathering information was more important right now! If she had to, she could always come back and buy medicines later.]

I'll have to look and see if there are any Pokémon that might be interesting out there. I've only been in the northern section of the forest so far. The Scorched Forest? I'm assuming there are fire types there.

Wouldn't it?

That's right! Fletching, magby, and slugma... my friend also found his charmander there. Pineco and murkrow are there too, but they're usually found in the southern forests.

Seeing as the forest has had time enough to begin showing a variety of fire types living in that particular environment, I'm going to assume the fire that burned that area wasn't recent.

[It would make sense. Pokémon didn't just suddenly appear. They would have needed time to move in and adjust.]

Do yo know anything about it?

No, not really... I don't know if anybody does. We know the forest pretty well, but it still has its mysteries.

But I'm just a small-time trainer, so I wouldn't take my word that it's a complete mystery. Maybe there is something people know about it.

Mysteries are meant to be solved, you know.

[Even though Blue doesn't have a definitive answer, Renko is still fairly pleased. Maybe she could try to solve this herself at some point.]

It's certainly possible. At the very least, there's bound to be some theories about it.

Oh, I know. A mystery is fun because of what you can discover.

[Taking one or two more items, she proceeds to the counter to pay for the things, thanking the person serving and slipping the items into her bag. Once to the side, near the way out...]

We can keep walking through the district and look at the shops if you want.

Exactly! Although there may come a day when there are no further mysteries to solve.

That sounds like a fine idea to me. Do you have any favorite places to shop?

Oh, here and there! Pokéco is a good shop. [She looks around, and then points to a shop nearby.] There. It sells a good range of pokémon foods and living goods for nearly any type of pokémon. You can ask the workers there for suggestions too if you want to, they're really helpful.

Did you want to have a look inside?

[Renko glances over at the shop, jotting its location down, as well as a brief note on what Blue said they carry. Unfortunately, there are only so many hours in the day. Browsing the interior of each store might be a little too ambitious for this outing.]

We should probably keep moving on. I can always look inside another time, right?

[She nods, understanding the same for time.]

Sure; I'll show you the way to the medical centre and then we can head to the library.

Both sound splendid to me!

[The medical center is definitely a place she needs to know the location of. Everyone has accidents at one point or another, and Renko knows very well she'll need to bring herself or her Pokémon there eventually.]
