Yo! Union, I got a question for you.

Okay, so, the thought just came to me [No inspiration or anything..] I got these two little guys here. [He holds his Nidorans up in his arms, either Doug is a really small guy or the Nidorans are oversized...

Anyway--]
So for years I've wondered this, maybe some of you Enlightened guy can help me out. Why do they both say "Nidoran"?

[The male Nidoran goes "Nido" at that and the female goes "Ran" both seeming rather happy in their masters arms.] Is one of them shiny? I don't think so, I mean, that's just a color thing.. right?? This one is a legitimate different shape and size, they can't both be the same pokemon.

They both know different attacks too.. one's a boy and the others a girl just so you know. This is Nigel [He lifts the male Nidoran, facing him--] and this is Nina [--then he lifts the female.]

[Laurent adjusts his glasses in an irritated fashion.]

I have to ask. It's bothered you for years, and yet you've never picked up a book on their species?

[Sighs.]

In the Nido family, each gender has a different body shape, color, and move set. It would be simple to find if you had only looked it up.

I am entirely positive. It states in the Pokemon Encyclopedia Volume 1: Chapters 29 and 32, that the two variations of Nidoran remain separate species, rather than a singular species that splits down different evolution paths based on gender.

The proper term for the girl is "Nidoran Female" and the proper term for the boy is "Nidoran Male". When Pokemon research was first starting, they were the first Pokemon to display gender differences despite being part of the same species.

It's a bit uncreative, I suppose.

Uh...I'm pretty sure it's just that girl Nidorans are blue and boy Nidorans are purple.

Well, there's Miltanks that are supposed to be all female and Tauros that are supposed to be all male...

...but those don't look or sound anything alike except the same body shape.

Hm...

They're the same kind of Pokémon, but one's male and one's female. Other Pokémon are like that too; if you look at Rhyhorn in the habitat you'll see that females have a shorter horn than males. Male and female Nidoran are just a lot easier to tell apart. They evolve into completely different kinds of Pokémon too; male Nidoran evolve into Nidorino and female Nidoran evolve into Nidorina. Burmy are the same way, they just don't look very different before they evolve.

Lots of Pokémon are cute and have gender differences. Someone's body doesn't make them better than anyone else. Their personalities are the important part.

[Unless we're talking about getting meat from them, but Apollo's assuming that Doug isn't planning on eating Pokémon he's bonded with.]

One is male, one is female.

Nidoran differ based on gender. There are Pokemon that look different based on gender. It's not really that unusual.

Do you think all male and female humans look the same, for example?

[Doug plz. She didn't even go to school and she knows this.]

No, but they all have very similar characteristics. Some species look very distinctly different depending on gender, usually for mating purposes.

[She hmms.]

I think there are some Enlightened who might be able to tell you that. What type they are.
