Familiar Guests
[Odd environmental effects aside, Union has obviously dealt with much worse in the past. There's probably not much to be concerned about. Around mid-afternoon, the Warp Band network flickers on to display the faces of some guests who will surely put Union's mind at ease. They may be vaguely familiar to those who have been in Union for a while: one, a fiery-haired man in a well-pressed suit, and the other a young scientist in a lab coat bearing an expression liable to curdle milk.]
Good afternoon, Union.
[Crystal tries to appear generally congenial, although it looks just a bit forced. It seems someone didn’t realize the feed started a few seconds before it did.]
It’s been a long time. I’m glad to see this city is just as charming as I remember it.
For those of you who don’t know us, I am Rory Donnachaidh, and the two of us represent Team Evolution. We were conducting experiments in this area around a year ago and stumbled across your fair city.
[Yes, thank you for not introducing her, Rory. She gives her colleague a cool smile before engaging the feed again.]
And I am Doctor Crystal Verdine. We are here to make sure there haven’t been any further repercussions after the accident so many months ago. The likelihood of that happening is very slim, of course, but it’s better safe than sorry.
Yes - just ensuring that our… activities did not result in further harm to the area around Union. We’ve received permission from your Council, of course.
Unfortunately, that means that we will be inconveniencing you for a little while.
We’ll be staying a few days. Of course, we understand your sentiments about our technology, so we’ll do our best to refrain from using it openly while we visit.
[Rory tries to look sympathetic, though it seems he’s smiling faintly.]
Rory and I enjoyed our brief stay the last time, and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to find one of us. Unfortunately, we don’t have any plans for more flashy displays this time. [Said a bit pointedly to her colleague. Someone was a show off the last time they were there.] To that end, if you notice anything odd in or around the city, please let us know. Thank you so much for your hospitality.
[And the feed flickers off. Rory and Crystal can now be found around Union or addressed directly through the band.]

I do have an herb garden I was plotting for the spring you might be able to help me with.
[Rory seems to have recovered from his momentary falter.]
But there is something odd going on in the mountains, you say? It's likely to be entirely unrelated, of course, but Dr. Verdine and I will investigate as soon as possible.
[Still, she might have cause to be suspicious.]

I heard you were pretty important to the negotiations in Caldera.
If they were completely irrelevant, I don't think you'd be here yourself. You'd send a lower ranking official. Right?
no subject
[There is a faint twinkle in his eye.]
More to the point, it was thought that as Dr. Verdine and I were the ones who first made contact, we ought to be the ones to continue relations. We would, after all, like to build some semblance of trust.

[ Her smile loses a little bit of its luster. ]
Trust has to be earned, you know. You bit us before, even if you didn't mean it. I don't think I'm the only one wondering if what you're saying is the whole truth. Or even the truth at all.
[
Ain't it the truth sob]no subject
I am sure your entire city is wondering the same. To that, I can only say that we have told the truth as we believe it to be at this time. We have no reason to assume there's anything wrong - the quality of truth may change accordingly.
no subject
There's truth, and there's withholding evidence. I don't wanna accuse you of anything, of course, but if you want someone to trust you, you should probably be up-front with them. I think you know more than you're saying.
So are you here to check up on Union, or because of the problems we've been having lately?
no subject
We are here to check up on Union because we fear there may be problems.
[His smile is now the smile of a customer service representative who's been serving the same customer too long.]
At this time, I am not authorized to explain further. Allow us some time for investigations.
no subject
But she should probably throw him a bone. Trust, right? She could probably get an answer easier if she at least offered something. ]
If it was problems with those machines, I'd understand if we were just seeing things around the mountains. But there are other places experiencing weird things too.
[ Not authorized? That was interesting. He wasn't going to let her pry, she could tell. ]
But you'll tell us eventually, right?
[ Time to shift gears. ]
Anyway, I actually contacted you to thank you, despite what it might seem like. Have you ever had your fortune read?
no subject
[He raises an eyebrow at the next comment.]
I have not, actually. And please, the safety of Caldera was a joint effort.
no subject
I know that, but you're the first person I've met who was involved.
It's my specialty. I was looking for a way to thank you, and figured it might be a good suggestion.
no subject
And quaint. Rory looks amused, though also as if he's not quite sure what his reaction ought to be.
"Will this work through your Band technology?"
no subject
"No, we'd need to meet in person." She said, reaching over and putting out her tarot deck. "You need to be able to touch the cards for them to get a good read."
no subject
"Very well! Where should you like to meet?"

Rory will just name a shop he saw on the way in.
