Today was the day they'd all waited for, and it's early in the morning when Rei notices that the eggs Ophir had been watching over for the last week were starting to shake and rattle like a hatching was going to happen. The call went out a little later, inviting all the other girls over to watch. Food was set up, and she'd encouraged Eiji to make sure Ankh was elsewhere so that he wouldn't just show up and be...himself. The hatching is nigh!

[For the best.]

That's the one. Ophir tells me the baby's been kicking around a lot lately. Definitely wants to get out and see where things go.

[Rei moves and kneels down by the next egg over, a pink and cream colored one. It jiggles slightly too, like it's trying to roll away.]

I drew an Igglybuff egg. Usagi-chan's. Puffy's, apparently. I wonder if it'll be anything like the parent.

[actsmagnificent]

[ That's your egg? Well, you have such pretty purple eyes that Natto feels this red and purple baby blanket is a good fit. Will you let him drape it around your egg? ] Leava lea.

[ Haruka watches the eggs go. ] That's an eternal debate, isn't it....?

[ Her Spritzee might have said something about Minako's Starly once, come to think of it. But Spritzee rarely has nice things to say about anybody so Haruka hasn't been putting much stock in her opinions.

The Starly egg wrenches. ] Not long now.

[faithfulflame]

[She nods to Natto. Go right ahead, little guy. You're such a sweetie.]

No, not at all. It's been a while since I hatched a Pokemon, so I have to say I'm a little excited.

[So formal. So, so formal.]

And I've never really spent a lot of time around a Jigglypuff or any of that evolutionary line. Do you know much about them?

[actsmagnificent]

Aside from the singing? [ Can't say she does. Natto carefully wraps the egg, then pats it on the "head" for good measure. What a good egg you are. He hopes you'll like the world. ] Leavanny.

[ The Starly egg twirls around in its blanket. Apparently whoever's inside is beginning to explore... ]

Right...they do do that, don't they?

[This could be awkward...]

Looks like yours is about to hatch. [A laugh.] How much is Natto going to mother the baby, do you think?

[actsmagnificent]

[ Haruka really doesn't want to make that estimation. She has a feeling it would frighten her. He's done well with eggbaby, though, all things considered... So she shrugs. ] They are the "Parenting Pokémon".

Van! [ Was that a crack? Oh boy! Ah, but maybe Natto should back up to give the baby space. It might be scary to see a face staring out as one's first non-egg view. Or should he move it? He picks up the egg, blanket and all, and looks around. Perfect hatching spot....He needs the perfect hatching spot! ]

I guess that's true.

[Rei probably doesn't want to know some of the ridiculous things Natto has done. He kind of weirds her out most of the time. And when he starts his ridiculous panic she just shakes her head and gestures to Sarek. Who responds as calmly and rationally as ever, gliding across the floor to move some furniture out of the way with his mind so there's space.

But really, it's more for Natto. Calm down!]

[actsmagnificent]

[ He's relatively calm! This is fretting, not panic - he wants everything to be just right, so Natto quickly shakes off his surprise at Sarek's method of opening space before hurrying to set the egg down there. This will work! There's no way the baby can hurt itself by accident with all this room!

A chip flies off the egg. Somebirdy's feisty for such a little thing. Natto looks around to see if any other Pokémon or humans want to watch. Look, everyone! An egg is hatching! ] Leavanny lea!

[ Haruka makes up for Natto's enthusiasm by seeming completely unphased by all this. She won't even take her hands out of her pockets. ]

[Rei and Sarek both just get out of Natto's way, moving to stand more or less beside Haruka. She's a bit more enthusiastic, smiling at the Leavanny mommy and trying not to laugh as he gets a little too excited.]

Looks like it's about time, hmm?

[actsmagnificent]

We'll see. [ It does look that way though.

There's another cracking sound, and then - a tiny clump of feathers pokes out from the egg. And promptly wiggles, stuck. Huh.

Natto stops himself from starting forward. The baby can do this. He shouldn't crowd the baby.

Okay, maybe he's a little nervous. That's a tiny life, after all. A little somebody. He smiles over at Sarek. You're so calm and mature. You're cool. ] Van.

[Sarek nods back, his mouth twitching in amusement. He's calm because panicking is illogical, of course. Calm down, Natto. Everything will work out. The baby will be out when it's time. These things often do take time, after all.]

[actsmagnificent]

[ Natto, summoning as much inner calm as he can muster, sits formally with his legs tucked under himself and focuses on watching and silently cheering for the baby bird. Who is taking a break after the surprise of rupturing her eggshell.

The wing withdraws. Haruka looks over at the other eggs. Early bird, huh? ]

[Well, His stat total is the one of the lowest, Ophir is probably just a little bit closer.

Rei smiles cheerily as the wing breaks out.]

Strong already.

[actsmagnificent]

Mm. [ There's a tapping sound as somebirdy's beak investigates the eggeshell, curious. What if she taps soft, then hard, then soft, then -

crack.

whoooooooa.

This could, indeed, take a while. Feel free to pull out a good book or something. ]

[Rei smiles vaguely and sits back down, reaching out to pick up Olympus Mons again. Sarek is content to just hang out there, and Rei's attention is more on Natto than the egg. What would he be doing?]

[ Schooling himself in calm, apparently. Deep breaths, formal posture. It's okay, little egg. This isn't going to be a big, sudden event. That's good. He'll wait.

Feeling the eyes on him, he looks over at Rei with a happy chirp. Isn't this great? ] Van.

[faithfulflame]

[Rei smiles somewhat tiredly at Natto. How does Haruka keep up with you. For that matter, how on earth did you manage to bond with her? She’s the farthest thing from motherly…]

[ Never underestimate Sailor Tsunranus's ability to decide other people can't possibly manage on their own, Rei. Which puts her in the awkward and annoying position of having to save their butts. GRIEVOUS SIGH.

Natto has gotten increasingly low-maintenance, though - he's got his costume room and his friends, so he's happy. And now a new friend is chipping more cracks in that egg. Oh, look! Was that a beak?

Haruka looks like she can't believe she's actually standing here watching an egg hatch. It'll come out when it comes out. Jeez. ] It's not a competition.

[ No scoring here. No judges. No reason to watch every tiny movement. ]

[So long as you don't suddenly start doing it to Rei...she'll be just fine.

Her eyes flicker with amusement when she notices Haruka's reaction.]

No, it isn't. It's a hatching, and a new way to share.

Have you raised many eggs?

[ So far she's just had Super Beauty, who's fine behavior-wise (for a Rhyhorn) but...undersized, and Ferrari, who....

...we don't think about Ferrari unless necessary. Also, that's definitely a beak poking out of that egg.

Natto continues to look interested. That's way too small to eat him. He's good. ]

Just one. Ophir, actually, is from an egg.

[She points to the friendly, affable little Litwick wiggling around the room making sure all the eggs stay at a constant temperature.]

But Eiji has had a couple of them, now.

[actsmagnificent]

[ Friendly Litwick. That's a new one for Haruka. ] They grow fast.

[ Except when they are Super Beauty don't.

The beak withdraws to prepare for a mighty peck. ]

They do. Ophir's still small, but she's a bit lazy, if I'm honest.

[She doesn't like going out where she might need soul energy.]

But it looks like the little one is about ready to make a grand entrance...

[actsmagnificent]

Hmm? [ Fine, kid. She supposes you get her full attention.

That beak does indeed burst through the shell again, sending a chip of eggshell flying as a tiny head busts out - but then the bird realizes it's not sure where to go from here. So it blinks, startled by the sudden light and the feeling of air against its face. Wha? Wha? Whaaaa? ]

Sta.

[ WHOA WHAT MADE THAT SOUND. More cracks form along the shell as the baby tries to wiggle its way to freedom. ]

[Rei’s eyes flicker with delight as the little bird makes it’s first appearance. She doesn’t really move or react beyond that, having witnessed more than a few hatchings, but it’s still wonderful to see that new life taking it’s first surprised blinks.]
