War Council

It has been several days since the people of Union arrived in Caldera. The evacuation of the wounded and those unfit to fight is well underway, and supplies are being brought in periodically to bolster the people of Caldera. It is time to take action. On the dawn of the third day, General Ironborn summons the visitors from Union to a war council in the largest building in the city. All are welcome to attend.

But when they arrive at the set time, they are greeted by a perhaps familiar, smiling face. Rory Donnachaidh greets them with enthusiasm.

"Well met. I had heard it was Union that answered the summons from my home. ...And to think you barely had the means to reach your eastern mountains when last we met. You've come far!"

He drops his smile for a more serious expression.

"I have assured the General that you are nothing if not single-minded in your pursuit of what you feel to be just and right. We're impressed by the speed with which you've acted so far, but it is time to face the Gigas army. The General has impressed upon you that we cannot hope to win in direct battle - the options remaining to us are diplomacy and sabotage. As a representative of Team Evolution, I am in a position to bargain as a third party with allies on both sides. I shall be accompanying the diplomats. Do not betray the extent to which my interests lie towards Calderan independence, I beg.

"Well, then." A polite bow. "I shall be relying upon you all to help us end this war."

He turns to General Ironbrand with a nod and steps back.

General Ironbrand steps forward and gruffly clears his throat.

"As weenie, er, ahem, as Rory was stating, we cannot hope to stand against Gigas’s forces. But I think with our friends from Union, we stand a chance."

He places a map on that depicts a rough layout of the mountain and Gigas’s forces.

"Gigas has placed a lot of effort in protecting their siege engines. The army is massed around them and they are content to hammer our defenses without committing forces. They have occupied much of our farmlands but have left them guarded with only a token defense, as they feel they have us well locked in the city and think our Earthkin are unable to commit to offensive movements. Additionally, their supply lines are not heavily guarded, there’s a steady stream of food coming from Crescent to keep them fed. That’s their weakness. If we strike quickly and with small but powerful strike teams, we can cut off their supply lines. Recovering some of the food would be ideal, but honestly destroying it and setting it aflame would likely work best. With the supplies crippled, likely it would be several days before they could get more and a hungry army is an unruly army. This might open some other avenues to us. Of course, I don’t know your true capabilities, so if the people of Union can provide any further ideas or guidance we would be most appreciative."

((Characters will have the choice to speak with Rory, to speak with the General, or to discuss the plans amongst themselves. Other possibilities may still be suggested in character, of course!

Important OoC Note: Due to a combination of a large quantity of modwork at this time and the war environment being particularly volatile, we ask that people refrain from placing themselves in Danger at this time. ICly, the soldiers will not be allowing people to travel in the warzone on their own. OoCly, if your character is below the Danger Level, we will ask that you find a group or leave off until the end of the event. Thanks!))

Of course.

[Rory glances back towards the General with a frown.]

I understand your organization comprises some of the elite of Union, but even so, you will be quite outmatched by the forces of Gigas. We have few options remaining to us.

And Gigas is well aware of it.

I've heard as much, and I must agree. From what I've heard of their strength, Caldera is lucky to have held out this long.

[ That's what worries Hans the most and he scowls, his tone a bit grim. If they went after Union, they wouldn't stand a chance. Hell, they could storm now and take everyone out, soon enough. ]

I understand previous attempts to negotiate have been met with resistance. If I may be so bold, what makes you think this time will fare any better? Peace, or even a truce, will be a hard sell to such a force.

Not that it's hopeless, far from it, I assure you we'll all do our very best, Savior willing. But I have to wonder... just what does Gigas want?

Gigas wants everything.

[Rory responds wryly.]

It is an unfortunate truth that the people of Gigas are, from birth, thoughtfully raised with what you may call an entitlement complex. In a certain sense, it makes for the creation of intelligent, innovative leaders who always achieve what they set their minds to. Consequently, they do quite well when gently humored and allowed room to expand.

[A pause.]

A bit like a particularly fussy bush.

And while Union may not stand a chance against Gigas in any direct combat, the fact remains that you have entered into the equation.

I see.

[ Hans ponders this, furrowing his brow. Damn, they sound kinda awesome. Horrible, but awesome. They've really stepped in it now, haven't they? ]

So basically the best way to deal with them is to humor them? Give them enough so they'll have room to expand, and hopefully they won't bring an army to our doorstep next?

[ Oh yeah, sounds easy. Sure does. ]

Fear not. Your city is far from their agenda yet.

[Rory retrieves a clipbook from off a table.]

Team Evolution has been a neutral party in this conflict for the past two years. However, we are prepared to withdraw support from Gigas, as the aggressor, if necessary. Officially, an invasion of this type stands against our mission statement. While it is true that the strong is meant to outcompete the weak, a homogenous population is also stagnant. When Gigas controls the known civilized world, the possibility for man to reach his peak becomes impossible. What Caldera - what Union and what other civilizations have to offer - will become lost.

Unofficially, both Calderans and citizens of Gigas rank amongst our numbers and as it so happens, war is bad for team morale.

The presence of Union and its warp technology based on the abilities of your 'Enlightened' is quite foreign. Gigas cannot possibly understand. We will stress that with such an ally, the siege of Caldera could and will last indefinitely. A siege relies, after all, on starving a city of resources until they cannot survive; you have already effectively broken the siege. We will explain that the Warp technology can only be used by Unionites due to their unique Enlightened abilities. They could not possibly hope to hijack it to bring soldiers into Union and cut off the assistance at its source.

Thus, with the loss of resources that Team Evolution has always offered and the prospect of a siege that could last another ten years, we will dangle the bait. We offer Gigas a few of the iron deposits they want so badly, allow that Caldera is willing to divert a certain percentage of their resources for steel production for Gigas in exchange for some paltry sum, and explain the number of Gigas soldiers spared were they to accept these conditions, which should be somewhere about 1,000 a month. We note that the only other possibilities remaining are to split the Gigas army in two and march half of it southeast to simultaneously besiege Union, which is quite unreasonable, or to continually occupy all their resources besieging Caldera until the Miltanks come home.

During our conference, reports should be reaching them about the actions of General Ironbrand's sabotage efforts, to which we will act benignly confused, but which will only serve to accentuate our points.

[Rory pauses.]

Of course, if you have other thoughts to contribute, you are welcome to do so.
