You are now hearing Jimmy Buffett in your head.
Who: Asemu Asuno, Alice Yotsuba
What: A ranger making a daring rescue
Where: Volcano
When: Over the weekend
Warnings: Volcanoes lend themselves to very catchy music.
The tropical island had quickly become one of Asemu's preferred places for training, especially since he felt more at home in the warmth of the tropical sun than he did in the cold, thin air around the ice rock. It also had a number of different places he could train in different ways.
This time, however, he was going farther in now that they knew what lay deep within the island. He was curious about the volcano, and wanted to see how he fared in such an environment.
It took a while to reach, but reach it he did, and still in fairly good shape. Training on the island had not only made him stronger, but also taught him its layout. Carefully, he went in through one of the tubes carved out by magma long ago and climbed up through it from the inside.

It does make her feel a little better that Gawain did found another trainer exploring the volcano, but no time to relax. Another rumble happens and some rocks and dirt fall, but Rosetta was quick on casting a shield to block the rocky debris off of her and the Cyndaquil, who quickly ducks his head into her arms.
Once its clear, she pulls the shield down and the Cyndaquil looks up at her, surprised that he's safe.
"It's okay. We will get out of this together."

Asemu continued to slowly lower himself down, unaware that his lifeline was slowly being cut away. For the time being, though, he appeared stable.
He paused a second to wipe his brow -- after all, this was a volcano they were in. It was plenty hot, even for a Fire-type Enlightened. Asemu tried not to think about what would happen if he got too close to the magma brewing below, especially since he actually knew his physics and, specifically, what convection was.
"Just hold on a little longer. You'll be out of here soon!"

The heat is slowly becoming unbearable, but freaking out and worrying wouldn't do anything good for her or her new friend. Rocks from the ceiling are a threat and the earth under her boots will either lead to another drop or the magma itself. Her own life is on the line, just the thought makes her close her eyes in silence as she holds the little Pokémon in her hands.
Surely she will make it out alive, she won't give up on trying that's for sure. If she doesn't... She doesn't even want to think of it.

In the meantime, Asemu continued to lower himself down. He was getting close by now.
"Almost there...!"
Then suddenly, the rope gave just a little bit.
"Wha--"
Asemu looked up -- and finally noticed the obsidian cutting into the rope.
"Crap!"
Quickly, Asemu began to pull himself back up. He had to return to the top and use a new rope as fast as he could, before the current rope could sever.
But then there was another rumble. This rubbed the rope vigorously against the obsidian shard, and it finally snapped.

That calmness just snapped right as the rope did, a fear of someone she knows is now in danger because of her.
Rosetta quickly set the Cyndaquil on her shoulder, who held himself tight as she rushed with open arms to catch Asemu. Another rumble happens, enough that she can feel a crack underneath her boots.

Asemu shot his hands out toward the ledge, but he wasn't close enough. He fell right past, down towards the magma below.
So that was it. That was how the story of the successor of the White Wolf was going to end? Incineration inside a volcano while failing to help someone who needed it?
...No. He might be doomed, but Asemu wasn't going down without a fight. He began releasing energy from his body, frantically trying to release enough to fight the gravity pulling him down to the bubbling brew below. Instinctively, he squeezed his eyes shut. Thus, he wasn't about to witness the change he was about to undergo.
A white light seemed to emerge from within his body, and it glowed brighter and brighter. At the same time, the air around him grew more and more agitated, until there was practically a whirlwind sweeping around him. Miraculously...his freefall stopped.
That was when Asemu opened his eyes again. He realized he was hovering in midair. Between the air and the energy he was putting out, he'd managed to break his fall. What's more, he no longer felt like he was going to pass out from energy discharge.
That just left the question of what to do from here. Carefully, he tried to rotate himself so he was upright, with energy only expelling from his feet. And slowly, deliberately, he began to rise.
Somehow...somehow, it wasn't over. He was alive. Alive, and stronger than before.

What she saw... That was evolution, wasn't it? She saw her own Pokémon evolve, but seeing an Enlightened evolve for the first time puts a good feeling in her. It was a wonderful sight and Asemu is okay.
The floor will give out at any second now, but escape is now possible. Asemu looked like he was stunned and trying to process that this did happen, but she is certainly not going to let him get hurt.
"We need to get out of here! Now!"
no subject
"Right!"
Asemu flew back up to the ledge and landed on it, then dropped down on one knee, his back facing Alice.
"Climb on my back. I'll carry the Cyndaquil."
Was he sure he could handle the weight? No. However, there was absolutely nothing to lose by making the attempt. Better to try to escape and fail than wait around for an accident to happen.
no subject
She climbs onto Asemu's back, Cyndaquil tucked safely in between the two bodies while holding himself tightly with his tiny paws on Asemu's shirt.
"Just fly us up and my Pokémon can handle the rest."
no subject
Even with the additional weight, Asemu managed to jump long enough to get going. However, since this power was still new to him, he was taking it easy, and they were rising at a steady pace.
Even at a slower speed, it didn't take long to get out of the hole. Carefully, Asemu set foot down on the floor several feet from the hole, then knelt again.
"Okay, that should do it, right?"
no subject
Right at landing, that Ursaring scooped Rosetta and Cyndaquil off of Asemu's back into a huge hug. Gawain just smacks his face with his own wing, but he's happy that his trainer is safe and sound. Between the slight sobbing is kind of like scolding from the bear, so of course she has to try to calm him down.
"It's okay, shhh... I'm sorry for scaring you. There, there..."
no subject
"Let's get out of here. I don't think it's too safe here, with the rumbling we were feeling down below."
