Been coming on changing times...
Who: Waver Velvet (
untalented) and Yuuna Sugasawa (
rainsrespite)
What: Unwinding and Reconnecting after the Battle in Glacier
When: Backdated to the days after everyone's return to Union
Where: Somewhere around Union
Warnings: D for Debriefing, Discourse, and Dice
Action
[It was a season of firsts for Waver this year, starting with his flight from Sanctuary and reaching a peak in Glacier with Union's violent encounter with a God-- and it was a lot for the young man to think on, especially as the nights grew longer and the weather grew colder. Though he was barely now into his twentieth year alive (an anniversary he had forgotten amidst the chaos of being fired upon by a horde of angry Dragons), he felt as inexperienced as a child who was still in grade school.
A lot of words weighed on his thin shoulders, and he needed to share them. That was chief among the reasons why he had arranged a meeting with Yuuna that afternoon, in a place of her choosing. They needed to talk....and he needed to catch up on more than just current events.]

In fine spirits, whenever he entered, she waved him on over.
"You'll like this place, Waver. Sit!"
no subject
The noodle shop was a pleasant surprise. It was a new place, and food was a universal to relax and get to now someone.
"All right," he murmured as he joined Yuuna, and dropped his bag on the floor before he slid in next to her.
"Sorry if I'm late. I don't walk around in this part of the city frequently....although, we should probably fix that if there's more restaurants like this around."
no subject
She jerks her head towards the proprietor, who gives her a smile back.
"I come here once a week at least, and it's pretty good if you're into this kinda food. Noodle soups are kind of the favorite here, but they do some pretty good stirfry too, if you're in the mood for that."
no subject
He didn't mind stir-fry or noodles, but Yuuna's review of the restaurant was enough to give him enough confidence in trusting her choices. Food wasn't an issue he was picky about, after all.
"There are some places like this in the Industrial parts of Sanctuary-- although they usually served meat and potato pies, stews, or dishes that we borrowed from Caldera."
Simple and easy meals were always the ones that made the heart feel better after a long, tiring day.
no subject
"They're good places. Good for the soul, after a lot of work. I'm fond of them, really. But you know I never asked. Do you have a favorite food?"
no subject
"Well, actually, it's nothing really all that special..." he scratched his cheek as he spoke, looked up at her shyly. "But, I've always been fond of my mom's cottage pies. Cooking is a commpletely different talent-- and I think it skipped a generation in this instance."
It was why his eating habits were so poor. He was as lousy in the kitchen as he was at erecting a tent on his own.
no subject
"What's in them?"
no subject
He shrugged. Anything that was loaded with potatoes and meat was a recipe for a good meal, in his book. Although he liked Calderan-style dishes, there was nothing quite like the simple comforts of the world.
no subject
And Yuuna isn't terribly culturally sensitive if it offends her nose.
"I hope you're hungry though. Ramen bowls are filling."
no subject
He pouted, even if he agreed with Yuuna wholeheartedly. Whomever invented the vile dish deserved a fate worse than facing down a thousand inferno dragons, in his opinion.
"Ramen bowls are a kind of soup, aren't they? It sounds good-- the soups I'm more familiar with have dumplings and potatoes instead of noodles, but they're filling on their own."
no subject
She wasn't going to comment further on the darn Stunlutefisk. It was the most disgusting thing she'd ever laid eyes on. Instead?
"And yeah, it's a little different. More...well, you'll see. It's filling and quick, which is why it's so popular with workers. But that isn't why you wanted to meet up, is it?"
She lays her palms on the table, looking at him expectantly.
"What's up?"
no subject
"We didn't have much of a chance to talk on the way back from Glacier," he started quietly. "I was wondering what you thought about....everything that happened up there."
no subject
"I won't lie? I'm afraid of that thing, and about it coming back. But you know, I actually feel it turned out okay."
no subject
He shuddered nervously, chilled by the thought of meeting that beast again.
"Sure, we found out that some of them are on our side...but, what else is out there?"
no subject
Yuuna looked away for a moment, thinking.
"Then there's also Yveltal. But I'm not sure what to make of that thing. It's just a name."
no subject
He had read the newspaper articles about that beast Union fended off before-- it sounded like a terrifying encounter.
"Although I'm willing to bet that the one from the caves over the summer is likely a neutral party, that doesn't take away from the unknown that is your Yvetal. I don't like it."
no subject
She'd been a new trainer then and she wouldn't forget the fury of that thing, but she was confident enough that the Rangers could handle it.
"As for...Yveltal? Death? I'm...not sure there's a force in the world that can stand up to it save for the other gods. And we still don't know where it is, or what it can do short of draining life away for miles around it. A variable, but not one that's necessarily a threat at the moment."
no subject
Though Waver was inexperienced and easily unnerved by the dangers of the world, he understood enough to know that they would need more than just luck eventuallly.
"Even with all of the things that Union has done in recent years, I'm still getting the feeling that we're under prepared for what could happen in the future."
no subject
It was a statement, and Yuuna punctuated it by slapping her dice down on the table and giving Waver a little grin. Yes, they'd need more than luck. But...
"You know how you win any contest, Waver?"
no subject
"Besides stacking the deck and rigging the dice? Not really-- I'm not a gambler, and I've always preferred knowing my odds before I played."
no subject
She rolls, and straight sixes again, just as the food is set down in front of them.
"That means training, working hard, learning. Once you learn how to see and feel things, then you at least have some control over your own luck. And of the dice."
no subject
"...It's strange, how that keeps coming up," he said finally, tearing his gaze away from the dice to focus on the dish before him. The noodles and vegetables smelled as delicious as they looked, but he was having trouble finding a fork...
"The numbers, I mean. But your words remind me of something I heard once, about luck being the byproduct of design. Is that what you're getting at?"
no subject
Zuulchopsticks, but there are the kind that have the rubber hooks for beginners at least.Yuuna shifts her hand to reveal the dice again and shrugs at the comment. That was what she was getting at, really.
"Basically? Yes. Luck is there, it's present, but it's something you can influence with skill, practice, and yes...a little cheating. Never, ever play a fair game when the odds are stacked against you. The enemy sure isn't gonna play our game. So...we make them. And we do that with training, and tricks."
Just like they already had done.
no subject
"What sort of tricks do you have in mind?" He asked, attempting to mimick the motions and pick up the noodles in his own bowl. "This is all beyond anything in the library, and that includes the restricted sections."
no subject
"Exploration, Waver. I'm sure there's something out there that can help us. It might be in a ruin, or in some place we haven't discovered yet, but there's all sorts of secrets out there waiting to be found. We just have to find them."
It sounded simple, but she was waiting to see what he'd say before she went on.
no subject
"...Such as more pokemon, like Khione," Waver ventured, recalling the elegant ice-type they had found on the trek to Glacier. "Or perhaps tools....or even more information, right?"
no subject
no subject
"It's going to be more explorations and expeditions in our future then, isn't it? Like you and your sixes."
As much as he was still uncomfortable with such extensive travel, there was no other practical way to gain what it was that they would need.
no subject
She leaned closer, her smile growing a little tired.
"You don't have to, though, if you don't want to."
no subject
"...There's only so much we'll be able to learn if we stay inside Union's walls, isn't there? If we want that information, it's only natural to go to the places where it may be hidden at."
no subject
She wasn't. She liked having you along, but she's not going to drag you by the ears.
no subject
Yuuna's care and effort was appreciated, but he knew the basic facts that were at stake here. If the world was spinning in a different direction, then there was nothing to be gained by staying in his libraries.
"...Besides, I want to find something that's not in Sanctuary's libraries. Then they'll have to show some respect."
no subject
It probably had an evil reputation...
no subject
"I've heard rumors of an ancient battleground," he murmured, recalling what he had seen and read about in the various texts in the libraries. "But, if the actual event happened before the Cataclysm, much of that information has been lost.
We don't have a strong history of exploring new regions in Sanctuary-- there's no protection group or exploration group like there is in Union. I can't say I've heard of many people personally visiting the site, either."
