First Snapshot | Video;Action

[The video is kind of hazy at first. Likely because who ever is handling the warp band is not accustomed to such devices. Also, they appear to be very close to the ground. After a moment it focuses on a young man, sitting on the edge of a fountain near one of the more busiest areas of Union.]

--getting here was the hard part. I need work but I don't have any of my gear on me. Not that I could set up a darkroom in the park or anything. We definitely need somewhere to sleep tonight.

[A loud frustrated sigh.]

Goro, what do you th-- [And that's when he realizes his pokemon friend is up to no good. His eyes go wide and his face goes pale.]

Goro!

[Anyone understanding Pokespeak will hear a Cubone who doesn't sound even a little bit sorry. You wanted help, so I helped! Now a lot of people will know you're looking for work! You should be thanking me!.]

[Hayato is not gifted in understanding Pokemon so he just gives him a flat look, probably guessing what he was probably saying and then reaching for the warp band. Goro drops it and scurries away. He'll appear proper on the warp band now with a slight twitch.]

...That was not the introduction I wanted to make to Union, but someone took it upon themselves to do it anyway. Ah- sorry anyone who was watching that. Since I'm already here, I'll just say it.

[He puts on a friendly smile this time.] My name's Hayato and I just came to town. I'm looking for work and maybe a place to sleep. I'm a photographer by trade but right now all I need is something to get by until I can buy new equipment.

[He quickly gets himself under control, though. Breathe Hayato.]

Major General. I didn't expect to see you here.

[ yeah that goes both ways. Thorin gives a sigh and a noncommital shrug. ]

That makes two of us. But it's not Major General now.

[...So Caldera had marked him MIA. He figured as much, if they didn't just assume he was dead.]

It's ...a long story. [Maybe Thorin will leave it at that.]

Ah, Mr. Oakenshield, then?

[ that gets Hayato a curious look, but he doesn't ask. for now, at least. ]

If you will. I've been here a few months, so I can help you as far as a place to sleep is concerned.

[It's a long story and he's not ready to talk about it. He does have a decent cover story in mind, though so if he has to talk, he will. He'll feel bad lying but what else can he even do?]

Oh. That would- [Goro cheers. See, he had a good idea. Hayato ignores him] I wouldn't want to impose or anything.

[They've met, but this is the fucking Major General.]

[ somewhere in the background of Thorin's feed, someone cheers back. Thorin ignores it, just like he ignores the slightly incredulous look on Hayato's face. ]

I'm offering. You can take it or leave it, but there's no reason for you to stay out in the street.

[Well. The man had a point. He glances at Goro for a moment and then back at Thorin. He nods, smiling.]

Yeah, you've got a good point there.

[He rubs the back of his neck a little awkwardly.]

[ Thorin nods in turn. ]

It's no problem. I can come pick you up if you need it, unless you already know your way around.

I got into the city today, so I don't. I've just been wandering around. [He looks around. and then takes the warp band to kind of show off where he is. The fountain and a few of the shops around him.]

[ uhm. ... yeah he's gonna get help on this one. when Hayato looks back at the feed there's a big round blue eye peering over Thorin's shoulder, apparently belonging to a Honedge. he bobs up and down emphatically and trades a look with his enlightened. ]

Yes, it should do.

[ he gets up from his seat. ]

Wait there.

[Oh hello there. He blinks but nods, smiling again.]

Roger!

[And he will do just that. He collects his troublesome pokemon and waits, sitting on the edge of the fountain like he was before scrolling through the warp band's network. These sure were nifty devices.]

[ it takes a little bit before Thorin shows up, Adlan floating ahead of him. the pokemon waves at Hayato as they come into view.

"See? There he is, just like I told you!"

much like anyone else, Thorin isn't exactly the same off duty as he was in uniform. though much more relaxed, he still strikes an imposing figure away from the battlefield, and his long strides gain purpose when he spots the young man sitting on the edge of the fountain. ]

[He looks up when the Honedge floats into his peripheral. Ah, he was every bit as a presense as he remembered. He grins but stands up very quickly. He wasn't in the army, and he was kind of a shit, but that didn't mean he didn't know how to have respect.]

[Goro isn't sure what the big deal is, but that's because he's a brat. He makes a point to climb up Hayato's coat to get to his shoulder and peer at Thorin incredulously.]

[ being respected is something Thorin still misses sometimes, so it's a welcome change. here, nobody knows him, name or rank or history. ]

Hello, Hayato. Welcome to Union.

[ it's a simple fact, and not stated with the exuberance and cheer it might be if it came from a native. and he nods to the cubone on Hayato's shoulder as well. ]

You and your helpful friend.

[Hayato grins, ruffling the skull on Goro's head.]

What a welcome, huh?

[He slides his hands in pockets and walks over towards.]

It's good to see you.

[ the smile on his face fades as he looks the young man over. there are only so many ways in which one can disappear in battle. and he looks very intact, considering. ]

This is a good place to be away from the war.

[Intact is a way of looking at it, not that Hayato is going to show anything else for a long time. His grin quirks a bit as Thorin looks him over.]

I'm glad to hear it. I was...

[Does he want to get into this so soon? There's not point in being secretive from Thorin, really, and he does owe him something of an explanation given that he's lending him a place to sleep.]

When Gigas took me prisoner, it was before Union's intervention. I hadn't heard anything about how the conflict went until I escaped. I'm ... [Caldera is still standing, free of Gigas' influence. The relief nearly floored him when he'd heard.]

[ he won't keep him standing here as he explains. in all, Thorin hadn't expected any kind of explanation so soon, even though he welcomes it. but he nods in the direction he came from. they can speak as they walk, his honedge floating ahead of them.

Thorin nods as Hayato trails off. the photographer's relief is palpable even now. ]

We managed. There's a ceasefire for now, and I came here not long after.

[He's happy to take the conversation with them. Goro stays stubbornly latched to Hayato's shoulder and seems to at least know when not to be a brat. It's usually when his trainer spoke with that kind of tone. He didn't like it.]

[He nods.]

A ceasefire, huh? Means we're not done yet.

[ Thorin scoffs. ]

There's no point calling it anything else. I don't believe for an instant Gigas will give up.

[A 'tch'.]

They won't.

[And then he wipes that unpleasant expression from his face. Maybe its time for a subject change. This was a subject that got under his skin and when things got under his skin it made certain changes of his obvious.]

... I sure did miss a lot, though. All this talk of unearthed civilizations and gods. What a funny time we're in.

Union thought they were the only humans left before they heard our emergency transmission. I imagine that was a surprise.

[He barks a short bout of laughter.]

No kidding.

[He looks up and around.]

For a place isolated like that, they sure are friendly.

Very welcoming, I'll grant them that. And peaceful.

[ and vulnerable. at least that's how it seems to him. ]

[No kidding. Especially given their involvement with thwarting Gigas. He's sure Gigas didn't like that at all.]
