[ now there's a new face on the network. if you've had to do with smiths lately you may have run into Thorin before, but that's about it. he's got a gruff look about him, somewhat unimpressed. ]

Since one of the librarians has taken it upon himself to ban me from the relevant sections of the library, [ that may have been a wry smile there but it's gone very quickly, ] I was wondering if one of you could tell me something about the history of Union. The story of the Saviour aside.

My name is Thorin. I came here from Caldera a few months ago, but have not had the chance to ... immerse myself in the culture.

[ not that he's all sure he wants to. something off to the side catches his eye, and he closes the feed with a nod. ]

That depends on what you can tell me. Perhaps you know why Union has no standing army. Perhaps you know what festivals and traditions people observe here.

We've never needed a standing army. Until we made contact with Caldera, we thought we were alone in the world. The Swords work well enough.

Speaking of them. Do you know how they came to be in the first place? It seems odd for a church so focused on life to train people in combat.

We're for protection, mostly, and supposed to use non-lethal force. Not that this stops them from letting us have swords, but mine at least used to be kept blunt before my accident.

[ Thorin gives him an assessing glance in response. ]

Is it possible to observe training? I am curious how it compares to what we do in Caldera.

Of course. Some of the captains like to show off--or, in my case, my Hondege likes to show off.

[ he scoffs. ] That's common with them, it seems.

It's about the only exercise he can be convinced to do, so I don't complain too much. Nice to know it's not just me, however.

Far from it. On the other hand, some are too eager to work and help for their own good.

Oh he's helpful. He's just...lazy, if it's not fighting.

Mine tries to help me with work in the forge.

... [ back to the topic at hand. ] Aside from the Swords of the Savior, are there any organizations I should know about? I've heard talk of the Rangers.

Yes. They tend to leave the city and help or rescue people more than the Swords.

So needing rescue is a common thing?

Well, people get lost if they're not used to the forest. It's rather big, after all.

... Indeed.

I have to admit I'm not used to the terrain myself.

We really should consider signposts, now that we have a reason to. It might make things easier for people outside the city.

Perhaps. Once the routes are better established. Is there anything else they do, besides rescuing lost citizens?

You'd have to ask one of them for details. I was in the Swords until my accident.

And are you not with them now?

No. I'm on sort of an extended leave for my health.
