starter one; action
She doesn't know how bad it might be, but they'd... someone would have sent her word if it was too grave, right? She'd been busy, had been helping Nozomi (and in doing so had been tired herself) and in doing so, had been tired herself.
But all she could do until now was wait, wait at home in the quiet of the manor (with Ichigo gone as well, it was so--- so silent---) and hope.
As much as she'd like to pretend she isn't a bundle of nerves, her pokémon can feel it, can feel the way her aura sparks like static, the way the beating rhythm of her core is erratic each time something makes a sound like an approach. But she doesn't say a word, for fear it will make things worse, and instead waits for Peri's call that Fuyuhiko has arrived.]
action
Even so, he's dragging his feet now. He bites his tongue, knowing why. He doesn't want Maya to know what happened. Still, it's not like her not knowing is going to make it any less happened, and he can see the manor just up the street now.
He sighs and releases O-Ren, tells her to go on ahead to give Maya at least a little warning that he's back. She swoops over the gate and goes to look for Maya, calling out an anxious greeting.]
Re: action
O-Ren! Are you okay?
[She touches gently at the Crobat's face, looking past her for a moment as if to ask where Fuyuhiko is.]
action
Fuyuhiko lets himself in quietly and puts his hands in his pockets, looking down.]
I'm back.
Re: action
[She says, past a nervous laugh. (she wasn't going to but now, now that O-ren has said something, she's worried.)
Maya doesn't get to stay in that thought for long, as when she hears Fuyuhiko, her attention is on him.
Something's wrong.]
Well, it's about time.
[She wants to walk over, but she's rooted to the spot. Why is she this nervous? She should be relieved-- but she can't stop herself from talking? Smiling. It's okay, it's totally okay.]
What took you so long?
action
[He looks away, tugging at the knot of his tie, then breathes out.]
It's not a big deal.
[Swallowing, he lifts his head, and his eye is still bandaged, he didn't have time to do anything fancier for it. The shame of it all sticks hard in his throat, but refusing to face it is worse.]
action
[Maya covers her mouth when she blurts-- then makes a series of hesitant motions; takes half a step, opens her mouth to speak, moves her hands.
But nothing seems to be the right thing to say, and she's stuck between fear and anger and concern.
The action that wins out is her striding right over to him, taking his face in her hands, and asking--]
What did you do?!
action
[He ducks into his shoulders a little, tail tucked low, and looks, of all things, embarrassed. It fades for a moment into grief--because he knows exactly what he's lost, here--but then he closes his eye and covers one of her hands with his, moves it a couple inches away.]
It wasn't me. Like I'd be stupid enough to do something like this to myself. But the woman we found, she couldn't really control herself, so. You know, shit happens.
[He shrugs stiffly.]
It wasn't any more dangerous than anything I normally do. And it's just one. That's not that bad.
action
[Maya surprises herself in the way she raises her voice, but she can't stop herself.]
One out of two! That's a whole half! You coulda--
[She stops mid-sentence.
Breathes, closes her eyes.
Why is she so frustrated by this? It wasn't his fault, and not the woman's fault either, and everything is fine now---
But it's frightening. It's frightening, and she can tell Fuyuhiko is bothered as well, so why is she so frustrated?]
...Sorry.
action
Look, I know. I know I could've.
[After a second, he puts her hand back where it was against his jaw and holds it there gently. His palm is warm, despite the weather. He studies her face again, his own expression solemn and set.]
Mayoi, it's fine.
[He breathes out.]
It's not like I'm gonna do that shit ever again.
action
She stares right into those blue eyes for a moment, breathing slowly, before she wraps her arms around his neck.]
You're an idiot.
[Maya has no heart to feel racing, but the rhythm of her core slows just slightly as she concentrates on his warmth.
He's an idiot, but he's alive. Everything is okay.]
You better not.
action
Seeing Maya, doing this, it brings home the fact that everything that happened was real. He tilts his head a little, aware of the scent of Maya's hair, the fall of it over his arms.]
I gotta go back home for a while. To sort things out. [He sighs silently.] The old man's gonna bust a lung when he sees this. Savior's sweet ass help me.
action
Yeah, he might actually kill you.
[Resting her cheek against his shoulder, Maya loosens her grip just a bit.]
I guess... that makes sense, though. You were only gonna stay to watch Yomiel and Oba-san, right?
[What ever happened to that? That problem had been long since solved.]
action
At first, yeah. But one thing led to another, and--right, I'm letting Hajime and the little Enoshima girl stay at my usual place.
[Fuyuhiko, Junko is still taller than you.]
action
{She doesn't pull far from him either, though she moves her head away just enough to look to the side and ponder.]
It's... just been a long time.
[And it had been nice. Before that, the manor had been pretty empty, even with her pokémon around-- but she can't say that. He's got business, just like she does.
It doesn't stop her little wisps from dimming slightly.]
action
[His hands tighten, but only on each other. The truth he's been dodging since the mountain rests on the tip of his tongue:
His family won't need him, like this.
He opens his mouth to start to say it.
And then closes it.]
It shouldn't take too long to get everything in order. Savior knows I couldn't stand staying there longer than I have to, anyway.
[He finally moves one arm away to play with a loose strand of her hair.]
So...since I won't be able to go back to my place afterward until Hajime gets his shit together...can I leave most of my crap here? [His gaze drops, then returns again.] For when I come back.
action
"When I come back."
Maya's fond of that prospect.
Saying so directly would be too easy, of course, so she rolls her eyes and puts on a front.]
Well, it would be mean to refuse a favor for a blind man, I guess. I suppose Shiyon won't mind making sure it doesn't get dusty.
As long as you don't take forever to come back around.
action
Che. If it takes longer than a couple weeks, try to channel me. I'll probably've died of fucking exposure to those asswipes. I got a sensitive nose, you know, and they all reek of their own bullshit.

LETTER ONE what is a date what is time fuck that
Also, it gives Flicker a chore to do.]
[The letter is, of course, signed with a little cartoony doodle of Shinrei waving to our fair reader. The paper is a hazy lavender, and smells lightly of old wood, as though said paper has been scavenged from a barely-used drawer.]
no subject
He misses something inexpressible.
Flicker's appearance at his windowsill is enough of a novelty to break Fuyuhiko out of his funk, though. After making sure no one's around, he gives the little Pokemon a piece of cookie and opens the letter, snorts, and allows himself, in the privacy of his room, a ghost of a smile.
His Murkrow Yahiko accompanies Flicker back to Kurain, but he doesn't take the honor of letter-carrying away from her. Fuyuhiko's handwriting is old-fashioned but hasty on grey paper.]
no subject
Maya's glad to receive the response, grins about it as she reads by the light of her pokemon, and writes back eagerly.
Flicker flies her letter back to Fuyuhiko, giving the proper exchange of responsibility back to Yahiko (but making sure to catch a nap before she heads home.)]
First and foremost, I am too young and cute to be a grandma. Secondly, letters are great. Even my cousin loves letters, you butt.
Anyway, I figured it would be a pain. Sorry it's not fun, but I'm glad to hear you're okay.
Actually, if your sister wants to write me, I'm studying at the Coastal Ruins for a while and training some of my pokemon. I won't be gone more than a few weeks, so don't worry. I'll probably be home by the time you are! And I miss her too, so I'll write back.
Don't let those grumps keep you down. Pretty sure you're enough of a sourpup for them all, anyway.
Miss you.
Maya

[Aren't they? Fuyuhiko pauses in his writing, and a little blot of ink lands on the page where he's hesitated. But he goes onto the next line.]
no subject
That's not something Maya wants to answer, it seems, because she ignores the question in her response in favour of decorating the top of her lavender coloured stationary with a gradiose--]
