The "Good" Doctor

The Warp Band flickers to life early in the morning, to reveal a room not entirely unlike Rory’s. The lights are low, and there are papers strewn in every which direction. The usual immaculate facade that was Doctor Crystal Verdine is otherwise gone; her hair is tied out of the way in a hasty bun, her lab coat crumpled in the corner to the side, and her usual attire traded for what appear to be night clothes. A pair of glasses sit on her nose, and she seems to care little for posture and appearances at this point; the otherwise youthful woman appears to finally be showing her age.

She looks tired. Turning on a lamp beside her, she engaged her likely captivated audience.

“Good morning, Union.

“As you know, my name is Doctor Crystal Verdine. I suppose my full title might be a bit more relevant, and since my colleague felt it necessary to sling his around:

Director of Gigas Enhanced Research Facilities, Professor of Evolutionary Biology, and Professor of Posthuman Physiology.”

“I imagine I’m not your favorite person right now,” She began, a cool smile on her face. “Let me be frank: I don’t care what you think of me. Hate me. Despise me. Yell at me. I don’t care. I never have.

“What I do care about is resolving an issue that, unfortunately, Union has become involved in. The Enhanced--or Servitors, whatever you want to call them, it’s all semantics at this point--are dangerous. I’ve been monitoring your conversations with Rory, and I see that many of you believe that they can be saved.”

Her cold smile fell, and she brought a hand to her face. “I agree. Think of me as you will, but if there were anyone who could do it, it would be the Savior’s own.” Her voice was a bit saccharine at the mention of the Savior, but she quickly moved on.

“It was our hope to be able to take care of this on our own, and not involve Union directly. Let me be clear--we were given no concrete reason to believe that they had gotten this far. When we arrived in Union a few days before, it was our hope to be able to rule it out as a possible place of interest and move on. By interacting with the general populace, we hoped to be able to rule out Union entirely. Unfortunately, the information we received has been very limited; we do not have access to your network, so if there were any announcements made, we did not--and still do not--know about them. With the information we were able to obtain, we were not able to say, without a shadow of doubt, that they were here, so we chose to say nothing so as to avoid inciting panic. We realize now that that was a mistake.

“We did not know that the Enhanced were capable of changing the state of things as they have. Strange weather effects aside, Union seems to have a habit of gathering oddities, and we merely chalked it up to that. It was, as far as we could tell, unrelated. I will take personal responsibility for this. I did not want to pull your city into our search if I didn't need to, because I could only image how you would react.”

Pausing as the door behind her opened, the scientist turned and spoke a few words, taking a large folder and setting it on the desk before her. Crystal then turned her attention back to her audience.

“We hoped to not involve you,” That smirk returning, “But we have no choice. This is the world you live in, outside of your self-imposed walls. This is no longer just our problem.

“My colleague mentioned sanctuary for the escaped Enhanced, away from Gigas, and we will be doing everything in our power to arrange this. I feel it necessary to note that, despite popular theory, we are not directly affiliated with Gigas. There are those, like myself, who are originally from the city, but do not agree with their overall doctrine. Even the thought is something of an insult to us and our ideals. But I digress.

“These Enhanced are dangerous. They will not attack without reason or perceived threat, but I cannot make the same guarantee once they are approached. They can be pacified, and should and must be brought back, safe. I have personal stake in this. As do you. After all, you know one of the Enhanced out there.”

The good doctor opened the file in front of her, skimming it quickly, before looking back up.

“There are 10 at large, which lines up with the anomalies that we have been seeing over this region. Their files are currently located in Gigas. I will feed you information as it becomes readily available to me--names, histories, typings, whatever you deem necessary to pacify them and bring them back.” She looked firmly into the camera, a slight glint from her lamp catching on the lenses of her glasses. “You will not kill them, unless it is your only option.”

Crystal took a moment to close her file, roll her shoulders a bit, and take off her glasses, perching them on her head. “I open the floor to questions. Screaming about how we were wrong, and the other idealistic proclamations will be ignored and should be taken up with Mister Donnachaidh. My only concerns are reducing damage and ensuring the safety of all parties involved.”
