Who: Makoto & Kanji
What: A fated meeting over cute bentos and adorable handcrafts
When: Backdated to before the Citadel event
Where: SCHOOL CAFETERIA

[Normally, Makoto likes to eat her lunch outside in a nice, secluded spot on the school grounds, but when it rains, she has to stay in. There aren't really any secluded tables in the school's cafeteria, so she makes do with the first empty one she can find...which is pretty much the same thing, as no one ever tries to join her.

Once seated, she unpacks her lunch, spreading out her checkered napkin on the table and arranging her bento boxes on top of it. Once everything is settled to her satisfaction, she picks up her fork and digs in. ]

[Either he's telling the truth about knitting and sewing, or he's bullshitting her, and Makoto really doesn't have a lot of experience dealing with her peers to draw on to realize this, so she just assumes he's telling the truth.

Anyway, if a monster tomboy like her can have traditionally girly hobbies, why not a tough, scary-looking guy?]

I always thought it would be fun to learn how to knit. What kinds of things do you make?

[Okay. She hasn't shut him down for it. Good. Good. This is progress.]

I learned pretty young. Lemme get an example -

[Diving into his bag for a moment - ah, that'll do! What he pulls out is a little Togepi plush on a chain.]

Stuff like that. Clothes, too.

Oh, how cute!

[All residual awkwardness is demolished in the face of an adorable Togepi keychain. Score one for Team Cute!]

And you sew clothes, too?

[Nothing but admiration from this corner.]

[Okay, the awkward hurdle's getting torn down here. He leans in closer as he gets to explaining everything, relaxing into it all.]

Yeah - I ain't done it as long as I've done the other stuff, though. Do a lot of my own stuff, an' I make bits and pieces for my Pokémon.

You sew your own clothes? [She's sewn a bit, and has enjoyed it, but she never got quite that industrious. Also:] What kinds of Pokemon do you have?

[She's picturing a Togepi in a little scarf and hat.]

[He nods at the first bit-] Well, I kinda had to redo my whole wardrobe when I evolved, nothin' fit right any more and it was cheaper that way.

An' what've I got? Lemme see... [Listing on his fingers, now.] Ampharos, Houndoom, Axew, Pidgey, Carbink, bunch of others...

Your entire wardrobe? [Y-yeah, she can kind of see why...] Did you start entirely from scratch?

[Oh, all cute pokemon, with the potential to be even cuter with a handmade accessory...!] So many! I guess you've been exploring all around outside of Union, huh?

[...Wow, she's asking a lot of questions...is she asking too many questions? She doesn't want to be annoying, but he's made her insanely curious, too.]

Yeah. That's ... [and a spot awkwardly] kinda why I've been missin' classes.
[One of the reasons, anyway.]

But, right. Some of it's from scratch, some of it's just reworking stuff... it's just whatever works. [A bit of a shrug. He just does this stuff, doesn't think about it...]

That sounds like way more fun than class.

[Exploring, that is. Which is something Makoto's always wanted to try...HM. Maybe she'll take Sunny out this weekend and just...do it.]

...Actually, so does rebuilding your wardrobe.

[An enthusiastic scholar Makoto is not.]

Yeah. It was a hell of a job, but I got there. Made stuff for my guys with what I had left...

[He scratches his head a moment.]

So, what d'you like doin'? I mean, looks like you're a good cook...

Oh! Um, well, I like gardening. There's a little flower shop in the business district where I work part-time after school most days. Sometimes I'll go to the arcade or the theater.

Huh, yeah, I think I've seen the place! Ma's asked me to get flowers in the past...

Really? You should definitely come by, sometime! You don't need a reason to enjoy flowers.

Well, I guess they're nice like that...

It's getting to be the best part of the season for roses. And there's still some late-blooming iris, too. Oh, and the lilies! We've just got our first batch of bright orange lilies in. They've been so popular we've been selling them almost faster than they can bloom!

[It's less sales-pitch and more enthusiasm for the subject at this point, really. Sorry, Kanji...]

[It's all kind of washing over him. He is really, really not an expert...! Blink. Still looking happy to listen, though.]

Heh. That's cool. Sounds like you've been really busy...

Sort of! I can only work so many hours every week because of school, though.

[And that's kind of a downer, tbh. She doesn't really like being in school, and has more fun with her coworkers and customers.]

[He gives a bit of a sigh in sympathy.]

Yeah. I know how that goes. I've gotta help ma at the store, work with my guys, come here...

How come you still do? Come to school, that is. I mean...[Is this a weird topic? Or a rude one? She's not sure. But Kanji seems pretty nice, even if he kind of does have a scary face (not that Makoto can judge, really), so maybe she can ask without alienating him.] There aren't very many Enlightened here, after all.

[His face falls, his ears droop a little-]

I dunno sometimes. Seems pointless. But I just...

[He pauses and takes a nibble out of a riceball. Why does he even bother? He could go off, do his own thing... hesitantly-]

I guess it's for ma as much as anythin'?

[Oh no, his ears are kind of cute....uh.]

That sounds like a good reason to me.

[Well, she sure seems to have put her foot in her mouth, here. Time to replace it with a mouthful of veggies from her bento.]

[Well, that's one cute thing?]

Mmm.

[Honestly, sometimes, he confuses himself. He's got to try and be strong. Got to train. But he runs away from what he's got to do - but what is it that he's got to do?
Ugh. This is hard. More lunch.]

Just gotta do what I can.
