O~kay, I have a little question for you people.

Say you have this huge crush on someone and they feel the same about you and everything should be just fine except-

Except you know your super rich and influential family are going to disapprove. And not 'disapprove' as in think you could do so much better, you shouldn't commit yourself too much at your age, maybe you'll see things differently in a while. I mean more like huge rows and insulting them publicly and you quite possibly getting disowned.

Especially since you more or less just broke off the engagement with the girl they wanted you to marry.

The longer you hide it, the worse it'll be when they find out anyway. And it sounds like you pretty much expect them to even if you don't say anything. At least if you tell them, you can do it on your own terms, sorta.

At the very least, I'm guessing you're able to provide for yourself? If this person is more important to you than your own family, then really, you've already made your choice. It's just a matter of following through and taking the consequences as they come.

My mom and dad were lucky enough to fall in love with the person they were promised to. It's hard for them to see why I can't do the same. And my uncle wouldn't know true love if it bit him.

And it's not that they're more important than my family, not really. It's that my family isn't more important than them either. And I guess I want to have the berries and eat them, as the saying so eloquently puts it.

Perhaps... I might have something in mind, but it could cause you more trouble down the way. Definitely only a temporary fix, but hear me out.

You mentioned that you have a "crush" on this person. I'm sure they'd tell you that a crush isn't something you should risk your family on. And maybe you want to, or maybe you don't. But you'll never know if you don't date whoever you want, which I guess is the problem.

Your family might not approve if it's anything serious, but if you tell them you're just... going through a phase maybe, and you're just fooling around, and you need time, then they might believe you and they might 'wait for it to pass.' Which it will or it won't. But it does give you some time to figure things out. Well, as long as the person in question doesn't mind the odd looks from your family... but odd looks are better than outright contempt, right?

I'm fairly sure I know who this someone is. I would sit them down for a discussion and prepare them in advance with something to the effect of "I have something important to tell you. You probably won't approve, but it feels more respectful to all around to be honest with you rather than lie."
