(001/action) The Forest Shrine

[Forward dated to Monday the 20th.]

[Elly is back on the patrol. She has her Fletchling, Severain, with her today. She stuck to the forest after getting back from the expedition, giving herself and her Pokémon some rest after the intensity of the last patrol. She decided to investigate the shrines that a few reports from other Rangers and wanderers mentioned, though. That led her to the Forest Shrine. She stares up at it, at the moment.]

[Her rod, which she had used to beat back some underbrush, is in hand. Elly flicks it it out to the side -- and then it telescopes back in. She spins the smaller handle, and tucks it into her belt, before she starts walking closer to the small building and the altar.]

[A place where the dead come back to life... she finds that hard to believe, still.]

[Elly, you have the best timing.

As she beats back a few stray branches, something heavy connects with her rod. Still managing enough force to launch it... did that thing just screech as it flew through the air? Whatever it is, it lands with a thunk in one of the bushes a few yards ahead.]

What--

[Severain turns, looks at Elly, and shakes his head slowly.]

[Elly winces and darts forward, towards where she batted the poor thing. It must be a Pokémon, because it screeched. Which makes her feel guilty and embarrassed. She slows down as she gets closer, and she calls out nervously.]

I'm so sorry! Are... are you okay?

[After classes, Sora decided to slip out again into the forest. He didn't want to go back to the orphanage, at least not until he had to. Training and exploring were a better way to pass the time.]

[And so with his Shinx trailing behind him, and an axe strapped to his back- at least he seems better dressed for the cold weather than he was before. He's a bit surprised when he sees someone else out here. Enough that he'll make a small surprised noise and dart back behind a tree- peeking out to watch what she does]

[It is a Pokémon, a Seedot, in fact. It shakes itself back to its senses and waddles out of the bushes. And man does it have a problem with you, Elly! The nerve! It's going to gripe a bit. Loudly.]

[Jinxie hangs out here a lot. Here and the Lake Shrine. They're nice places to hang out and get a little peace and quiet away from the bustle of the city. Glancing up at the sound of Elly's approach, she smiles.]

Oh... hi, Miss van Houten.

[Elly holds both hands up, as if to say 'see, the rod isn't anywhere nearby,' and approaches slowly. As she gets closer, she stops and kneels down in front of it.]

[She lets the griping go on for awhile.]

I'm sorry. I should have looked where I was swinging that.

[Elly is currently looking up at the side of the building, perplexed and trying to get a good view at whatever it is. She tilts her head up, looking at the ceiling for a moment, and then she takes a few steps closer. It's her Fletchling that notices the noise, not her.]

[The bird takes off from Elly's shoulder with a squeak. It flutters its wings -- and that makes Elly turn. She raises an eyebrow, as the Fletchling flies right towards Sora and the Shinx's hiding spot.]

Severain? What is it?

[Elly looks up as she comes around the side of the shrine. She pauses, then, and her eyes light up -- and then she smiles. She waves a hand in the air, and her Fletchling chirps once from her shoulder.]

Oh, Jinxie. Hello! I didn't expect to see you out here.

[Or past the city walls, really.]

I come here with Dokuro a lot. It's very peaceful.

[And speaking of Dokuro, he suddenly drops down from where he was floating up near the treeline - right in front of Elly's face in an attempt to frighten her.]

Dokuro! Be good. This is a friend.

[Crap the bird saw him. He makes another surprised noise and jumps away from the bird's flight path before it can hit them]

Whoa! Easy now!

Who's there?

[Elly calls it out, raising a hand up. She's not quite getting ready for a fight, but she is being cautious. Bandits are rare, but not unheard of; wild Pokémon are known to be dangerous, though.]

Kyaah!

[That makes Elly jump back and sputter. She stares at Dokuro, before she shakes her head a few times; Severain squawks with annoyance, flapping up into the air, but stays put.]

...hello, Dokuro.

[At least Dokuro calms down fast.]

[Well, so much for hiding. Sora knows that it's probably best to reveal himself. So he steps out from behind the tree and gives a sheepish wave, with a matching smile on. ]

Uh, hiya!

Sorry, didn't mean to surprise you.

I'm sorry. He likes to play tricks on people sometimes.

[Dokuro looks appropriately amused with himself, happily floating next to Jinxie's head now.]

[Elly relaxes a good bit when she sees Sora. A kid, she thinks, who probably came out here because it's relatively safe in these parts. She lowers her hand, then she smiles.]

I'm fine. I thought you might be a wild Pokémon, that's all.

[Severain flies around Sora, then lands on her shoulder again. He chirps once more.]

Did you come here to train?

No harm done, at least. [She dusts herself off -- nevermind that she didn't just get dusty, but it's a nervous expression -- and then she looks back at Jinxie. She smiles, then.]

It is very nice out here. I can't quite figure out what the shrine is for, though.

Oh, heh nah! Definitely not one of those!

[he relaxes some now, grinning]

Yeah- well, and to explore! I've never been here before.

How about you?

[That gets a full smile out of Elly.]

Not to the shrines. I've seen a good portion of the woods, I think. I'm a Ranger.

[She nods, and then she looks off at the Forest Shrine. Elly looks thoughtful for a moment -- and then she looks back at Sora.]

It is nice. And mysterious, too, I think.

It's okay, he's actually really friendly.

[Jinxie frowns over at Dokuro before smiling apologetically back to Elly.]

I don't know either. I just know it always feels very calm and quiet here. It's nice to come here sometimes and clear your mind.

[His expression lights up with awe the moment he hears what she is]

You're a Ranger? Whoa! I've never met one before- that's so cool!

[But wait; what about the shrine]

Mysterious? How?

[...Oh, it was an accident? Well then, that's a totally different story! I mean, it's cool and all, it's not like it hurt THAT much, and flying through the air like that was kind of fun.

Can we do it again?]

...what.

[DUN DUN DUUUUUNNNH. FORTUNE SMILES UPON THEE, BRAVE TRAVELLER! THOU HAST ACQUIRED:

Venture forth, brave descendant of Erdrick!]

[Elly stares for a moment longer, before she makes the rod extend out again with a snap of her wrist. Then she walks up, staring down at the Seedot with very confused eyes.]

Y--You're sure. About this.

Oh, you haven't? Ah, yes. I'm Ranger Elhaym van Houten, at your service.

[She smiles -- maybe a hint of pride in that smile -- and then she looks back at the shrine. She nods, thoughtfully.]

As far as I know, no one is quite sure who built it or what it does. There are rumors of the dead appearing here, but... they must only be whispers. The dead can't return.

It is definitely good for that. And I think Severain likes it. [She looks up.] Lots of branches for him to perch on and such.

[She looks back at Jinxie and tilts her head.]

How long have you known Dokuro?

We've been together since I was just little. Almost everyone in the enclave has either a Ghost, Psychic, or Dark type Pokemon. They seem to like us a lot for some reason.
