8th Prayer: The Big Kahuna
Action/Video at the Beach:
[Okay, this is just so adorable that even a dour, serious young woman like Rei can't help but share it with the rest of Union. The Warp Band starts up, showing a scene on the shoreline. In the distance is an enormous, slow-rolling spring storm heading inland. It's still many miles off, but the effects of it are already beginning to show. Massive swells, enormous waves generated in the distance by the storm, are breaking against the shore at regular intervals. Each wave is larger than the last, and they're predictable in their formation (as predictable as they can be, anyway).
Basically? It's a surfer's paradise.]
Well good afternoon everyone. It's been a while since I made a public broadcast, but I've never seen anything quite like this before. I thought it was worth sharing and recording for later.
[The camera zooms in on something out in the water, a small group of Pokemon on, you guessed it, surfboards. A Gardevoir, Treecko, and Riolu all seem to be in the shallows, paddling around and trying to get a feel for things...but the camera moves up and focuses on something else.
A Pikachu.
A Pikachu in little swim trunks, shredding away down the long trough of one of the larger waves, laughing wildly as the wind blows his ears back. He makes it through the entire trough before swerving back and coasting back in towards the other Pokemon.]
Ariel's been at this all afternoon, and he's been trying to teach the other three how to surf too. I had to do a little reading on the sport, but apparently he's pretty good. Has anyone else ever seen something like this?
Action that evening, Lake Shrine/Union:
[After the storm finally does hit the beach, Rei heads home, but decides to stop up at the Lake Shrine for dinner and a rest. She's built a small fire, but while she sets about cooking up some stuff, Ariel seems to have casually enlisted the other Pokemon in gathering up large wooden sticks and jabbing them in the ground in a wide circle. A few minutes later, he's lit all the ends of these poles up like torches and hops into the center of the ring to begin some sort of strange dance. Rei stops, watching the strange behavior before realizing that it's some sort of ritual.
She...doesn't really know what it's for, but after a minute or two she and the other Pokemon with her start to attempt to follow Ariel's steps, admittedly somewhat clumsily. Rei's never been much of a dancer, leaving that aspect of shrinework to her grandfather, but the Pokemon seems pleased that she's joining in. Never-mind that she'd never, ever let herself be caught doing this if she knew other people might be watching...
So, feel free to watch and wander up!]

You could say that.
[He leans to one side, angling the camera behind him to show... something very similar. His Pikachu doesn't have little shorts to go with it, but he has found a board, though it's more a plank than anything else, and he's currently surfing in much the same way, while the Squirtle and what looks to be the top of an Omanyte try to keep up.]
Dream World? Been there a couple times, but this is the only time I actually came back with someone. Do you think they're all like this?
no subject
You too, then?
[Huh...]
You know, I had no idea that Pikachu could even learn that move, but it looks like there may be something in the Dream World that helps them along? I found Ariel on a dream beach. What about you?
no subject
Yep. Me too.
[The extra weight causes a wipeout, but all three pokemon are soon clinging to the board and laughing.]
It must be, I wouldn't think electric types would be particularly big on swimming. Especially not ones with the Static ability.
[He watches as PIkachu climbs back up onto the board, with Squirtle holding the back end and Omanyte once more riding towards the back. They start paddling back in to shore.]
no subject
No, but maybe it's some sort of natural defense? Pikachu have always struck me as incredibly versatile Pokemon, and extremely adaptable. Maybe these grew up on a beach in the Dream World and developed on a different evolutionary line?
[Or maybe not?]
But I can see your point. Then again? They have a natural resistance to most things in the sea.

[He watches the others as they come in. The Pikachu drags the board over, Gordon turning his head to watch before remembering Rei and turning the camera to face where the Pikachu is gesturing animatedly at his board while speaking with a stoic looking Scyther.]
It's no good, brah. It doesn't cut. Floats alright, but--
[The pikachu sees Rei's surfing in the background of her video, and starts pointing.]
Like that! That's a righteous board, I need something like that! Think you could help a brother out, brah?
[The Pikachu shoves the board, end first, into the sand, and watches as the Scyther considers it. Gordon, not understanding a word of the exchange, just looks confused.]
no subject
The Big Kahuna waddles up and looks down into the camera.]
I guess? I made it in the Dreamtime. But I could give you a pattern?
[Eyeing the old man, Rei raises an eyebrow. Her eyes gleam violet a moment, catching the light oddly.]
Are you a Kindred Soul by chance? Or should I translate?
no subject
Not even an enlightened. Looks like he wants a board like yours, though.
[The Scyther flies over, leaning in close, almost too close, to the camera, considering the Big Kahuna's board, then he's back over to Lucas' plank.]
Oh... clever.
[Scyther is still for a moment, and then he's not, quick, sharp motions with his scythe arms, cutting away excess wood until, with a flourish that kicks any remaining wood from the blades, like a Samurai shaking their blade clean, he's done. The plank now much more closely resembles the board Ariel has been using.]
Righteous!
[The PIkachu collects the board, looking it over, then turns to the Big Kahuna.]
Thanks for the offer, brother, but this should do for now. What do ya think?
no subject
[A shrug. And she watches the display with some amusement.]
Impressive. Your Scyther's a smart one. And those claws...goodness.
[Ariel eyes the board critically, and shakes his head.]
You gotta sand the edges, dude. They gotta be rounded. And you may wanna polish them up?
no subject
[Gordon watches it as well.]
I guess that's what happens when your entire forearm is basically a sword.
[Gordon watches it as well.]
I guess that's what happens when your entire forearm is basically a sword.
<text=gold>Ya think so?</text>
[The Pikachu considers its board critically.]
<text=gold>Definitely better</text>
[As the PIkachu chatter animatedly back and forth, Gordon tries to bring the camera a little closer to the small rodent, but, with Pikachu topping out at just a bit over a foot tall, this is a bit difficult for the tall man, even from a seated position.]
Perhaps they might have an easier time of it if we met up somewhere in person?
It's Font not Text
How far down the beach are you? I'm directly south of Union as the Murkrow flies.
So it is.
Think you can show them how to get here?
[He waits a moment, and nods, turning to Rei.]
Ace will be by in a moment. See you when you get here?
no subject
[Strange man inviting her over. Yeah. Nothing weird about that. Granted, he says he's not Enlightened, and she has her team if he does anything weird.]
no subject
Needed an escort, miss?
[He jerks his head the way he came to emphasize the point, flapping its wings once to get a bit of sand off them, a Wingull it is not.]
no subject
All the Pokemon crawl out of the water...and a mound of sand slowly shakes itself off from where it'd been buried. An Arcanine, and a big one at that, trundles over panting happily. Ride? Ride!
Climbing on, the teen and her squad get ready.]
Lead the way.

[Soon, Rei can see Gordon's menagerie on the horizon, colors standing out sharply against the sand, blue and reds and greens. Scyther sits, legs tucked under it, wings flat against it's back. A herdier, wiry hair making it completely at home amongst the dunes, runs and plays with a growlithe, the pair coming to greet her as she arrives on the arcanine. The pikachu, squirtle, and omanyte have once more taken to the waves. Gordon turns, raising a hand in greeting, standing up from what looks like a boulder until the rhyhorn moves its head. His vacated spot is quickly taken by the swellow.]
no subject
Good afternoon, sir.
[An astute observer might notice the way her shadow shifts, slightly unnatural in it's movements.]
You know I didn't get your name.
no subject
Oh, I'm sorry.
[He offers a hand.]
James Gordon, with the Swords. I respond to either Gordon or Jim, sometimes Commissioner, but that's more a nickname my coworkers came up with. You work out at the shrine, right?
no subject
A pleasure, Gordon-san. And that's correct. I am Rei Hino, one of the priestesses at Hikawa shrine, and a liaison with the Kurain school of channeling.
no subject
Where did he get the shorts?
no subject
Oh, he...had them when I found them.
no subject
You've been at this longer than I have, are all Dream Land Pokémon like this? I mean, I heard they were different, but ours seem... very different. Not just knowing a move I've only really heard about with water types, but the board, the shorts and... well, temperament seems... odd.
[His attention turns to Arcanine, then down to Rusty, noting the Growlithe's interest.]
That evolves from Growlithe, right?
no subject
All the Dream World Pokemon I've met have been somewhat...odd, yes. My Gengar...[Her shadow twitches again.] and Ariel especially.
[And then a simple nod.]
And yes, it does. With a Fire Stone.
no subject
I'm Rusty, nice to meet you.
[While the Dogs introduce themselves, Gordon eyes Rei's shadow. He's too observant not to notice a shadow moving on its own.]
A Gengar, huh?
[He approaches Casius carefully, slowly and with his hands visibly empty, giving the large, powerful animal the respect it deserves.]
Just want a closer look, big fella.
[His attention turns back to Rei.]
Just how hard are these stones to find? I've got one of those moon stones, but that's it.
[Out on the ocean, Lucas paddles his board a bit closer to Ariel.]
no subject
Yes, a Gengar. Sabaeus...is about the only think keeping me from getting heat stroke on a daily basis.
[She holds out a hand and a black tendril snakes up out of her shadow, running along her palm. Good job buddy.
Arcanine, on the other hand? Seems alright with it. He shuffles closer, lowering his head for a pat. Or whatever. He's generally good with people.]
And they shouldn't be? Any engineer can make them.
no subject
Ah, that makes sense.
[A particularly 'choice' wave comes in, not fully breaking until almost right on the beach, depositing a water-logged pikachu, a squirtle, and an ammonite, laughing, in the shallows. The blue little turtle shoves two fists into the air, followed a split second later by the PIkachu. They call out in unison.]
Cowabunga
[The omanyte, meanwhile, comes over and starts... petting Rei's shadow.]
