Wave 2: Evolution Woes [Video]

So, a lot's been on my mind lately. When I arrived here, I learned Feebas can evolve with a special scale. I don't have one yet and I don't have much money on me either.

And rather recently, I realized I should if I want to get stronger but...Carp, I just get nervous thinking about it. It's not just simply a power boost but it's like becoming a completely new being, right? On the other fin, if I do evolve and get that relic to protect my clan, will they still accept me? The elders didn't know we could evolve to begin with.

Squid Girl, a Milotic looks completely different from a Feebas though. What if the clan doesn't even recognize me?

Besides, even before you evolved, you could at least fend for yourself back when you were an Inkay, right? I'm not so lucky. Squirt, Swift and even Flare are learning more moves and getting stronger than me.

[Speaking of Flare the Magby, there's a sneeze that could be hard off camera followed by a small burst of fire. Thankfully her other pokemon are there in case it escalated.]

Isn't that even more reason to do it, though? Then you can go back to your clan and protect them all, 'cause you'll be the strongest.

Ugh, I hate to admit it but my clan can be a bunch of scardy fish. They all kept flopping around while they wait for the Tidecaller until I decided to step in. And...they don't like change either so they might not want me at all. Knowing them, they might even think I might be something that'd eat them.

They sound gilly dumb.

Y-yeah...Still, they're my clan and I have my duty to get that relic that'll protect them. If I lose them, I'll be alone.

You can just hang out with me instead!

[She manages to smile from that. It's good to know she won't be alone after all.]

I would think that if your clan is in such desperate need of protection, it would likely be wise to show them that they have the option of evolution if they so desire. However, I can understand why you would worry so.

I just hope they see it that way too. It's fair to say, they don't like change. They were content with the idea that a Tidecaller would come in and save them all. I got fed up with waiting and took matters into my own fins.

It'll be tough because I imagine those scales would be hard to find to begin with.

Change can be a frightening prospect, particularly if one does not recognize that it is inevitable.

It may be possible for someone with the proper skills to manufacture the scales, although having no talent in that area, I cannot say for sure.

I agree. If what the oceans and the depths have taught me is true, being able to adapt and change is key for survival.

Ah yes, it turns out someone has offered to make a scale for me. So I got pretty lucky there.

Now if you do not mind my asking, perhaps you could tell me more about your people and the ocean?

Certainly! My clan lives very far from Union and in a deep part of the ocean. Being a species known to be rather weak, we can be easy pickings for our more aggressive neighbors. We do have a legend regarding a special relic and the one we call the Tidecaller. The relic is what protects us but every hundred years or so, its power fades. So the Tidecaller must go into the depths to retrieve a special pearl and then go to the surface to trade it for a new relic.

Majority of my clan was content to wait for the Tidecaller but I wasn't. So I ended up getting the pearl myself and they wait for me to come back with the relic.

Perhaps you should make sure your Feebas is at full potential while you save money to get that scale. [Lin doesn't comment on the whole clan thing, since she doesn't know much about it.]

[She laughs sheepishly.]

Actually, Ma'am, I'm the Feebas in question. I think I've learned all the moves a Feebas can learn at this point. Even my bonded pokemon know more moves than I do.

Oh. I was not aware that you were a Shifter. Well, if you cannot progress any further, what are you waiting for? If your clan is what worries you, you chould evolve in front of them.

Huh, I can't believe I didn't think about that! They'll shore-ly know it's me even if my form changes.

I just hope it'll go smoothly. That is, there is something else I do need to take care of but otter than that, I'll be able to go back to the ocean with my head held high.

If there's something that will make them see you in a different light, that would be evolving in front of them. There's no better way to show them that you have become stronger.

Well, I know it's not exactly the same, but... I kind of didn't want to evolve before it happened either. [Fai looks a bit sheepish, one hand subconsciously going up to touch the feathers on his head.]

See, I've got an identical twin brother, and... we've got different typing, and it already made us look a bit different, so I figured that evolving would only make it worse. [He shrugs a bit awkwardly.] And well, it did. But I can also do so many things I could never do before, you know? And in the end, us both holding ourselves back because we're afraid to become different would only have hurt us both.

[A small, apologetic smile.] Though I appreciate that your situation seems a bit more serious.

The elders of your clan aren't evolved themselves? Kinda figged a lot of the old guard pokémon are.

Well, Feebas require a special item in order to evolve so that might be a reason they haven't. Plus they are pretty old too so maybe they forgot.

Apparently they're pretty hard to find unless you can get someone to craft it for you. I wouldn't say we have guard pokemon since they did have a habit of swimming and hiding from danger.

Huh... [ a culture that's hiding, rather than fighting. It makes sense, especially for weaklings. But it's also something which doesn't strike Melaka as a particularly appealing mindset ] You'd think you could find them around out there, not like man's got control over pokémon.
