[It'd been a lot of effort to get all of this together, but secrecy was basically impossible so Rei and company had given up on making Ami's birthday party a surprise one. She was just too sharp, and it would've taken the poker face of a Rock type to manage any sort of secrets from her, so Rei'd just convinced Aurora and Madame Curie to get her out of the way so they could get things set up without having her fuss too much.

The decor was simple, but fitting. A lot of the flame motifs around the shrine had been covered over with watery patterns, and everything was set up around the central fountain. Soft blue light flooded the late summer twilight as many paper lanterns were covered over with cerulean paper to subtly tint everything the proper shade. Several tables and chairs were set up, one for gifts, one for food, and the remainder for guests to sit and eat. Cheerful music played throughout the courtyard on Rei's phonograph, classical pieces with a bit of modern flare, much like Ami herself.

And the food. Oh, the food. Enlisting the help of friends she'd gotten together quite a spread. Fish, steamed vegetables, dumplings, sweets, soups, a small feast all set out for the taking. There was also a sizable drink selection too. Juices, a few kinds of sodas, an interesting Calderan pepper-drink, and even a few light wines.

Basically, Rei had probably gone a little overboard, but it was a party!

[Pamela successfully convinced her family to forego throwing a celebration for her birthday this year in light of the fact that her second evolution didn't look quite so dramatically different than her first one and thus there was no need to show off. But honestly, she'd been occupied with work and it was nice to not have to worry about social events.

This one, however...this was Ami's birthday and she considered Ami a friend. Therefore, she made an effort to attend.]

Did you think I would do otherwise?

Pamela-san! [She smiled as she saw the older woman and bowed low, before moving into a hug. She was careful not to be too rough as they still had yet to make an antivenin for Pamela.]

I'm really glad you came. With everything going on, I feel like it's been far too long since we saw each other.

[That antivenin was elusive and Pamela almost had to wonder if her body's toxins were somehow evolving to counter their efforts. Either way, for now just wearing gloves and being mindful of close contact seemed to be the best solution.]

It definitely has. When I'm not out with my Pokemon getting some sun, I've been practically buried in lab work lately.

[Basil her Roserade confirms this with a little nod. Everything about his body language indicates that he does not approve of the amount of work Pamela's been doing lately.]

Well you know, then perhaps we should take a day off and go to the beach. You get your sun, I get to be around water. [And it would keep her mind off the fact that her significant other was going to Sanctuary without her.]

Perfect. I think it would be a nice treat for some of our Pokemon as well.

[She'll definitely make sure to bring the ones who would behave themselves, though. No need to make their trip unduly stressful when it's a time for them both to relax.]

I can already think of several of my water pokemon who would enjoy the ability to stretch out their fins and flippers far more. I can even bring the tent, if you like? I do not mind sharing.

That would be wonderful. If we find some soil where plants can grow nearby, I can grow just about any sort of fruit or vegetable we might want to eat. I'll just need to bring the appropriate seeds with me.

[Easily the most useful part of her Enlightened abilities, in Pamela's opinion.]

And I can provide the fresh water and keep us from getting overheated. [As Pamela was a grass type, she could never be harmed by Ami's water abilities.]

Are you able to request time off any time soon?

As it happens, I've banked a lot of vacation time. I have to give them some notice, but we could probably plan this for sometime early next month.

[She nodded. She wished it was earlier but she had to give notice as well.] Earlier next month sounds wonderful. I can't wait. It'll be nice to spend time just the two of us.

And outside of work, yet.

[Not that they wouldn't spend some time talking about science, simply because it was a big interest for both of them.]

Knowing us, despite being on vacation, we may find your antivenin yet! Or something else entirely using our combined knowledge. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest, Pamela.

Every girl needs a hobby.

[It just so happened that they were both sincerely interested in academia and research.]

Maybe the change in scenery is just what we need to make a breakthrough.

Ah, perhaps so! The change in scenery may provide an element in our experiments we never even thought of before! Wouldn't that be wonderful! And just think, we could use it as a basis to all other antivenins! Think of all the pokemon and people we can help cure with that breakthrough!

It would even help the Poison types who don't want to poison others but simply have that side effect.

[Something she can sympathize with well enough. Thankfully she can keep her poison under control by wearing gloves for the time being, but it would be nice to not have to worry about that. The only real benefit to this little problem is that her family has stopped nagging at her about how she needs to get married. Coming up with an antivenin for her poison takes precedence.]

Yes... unfortunately we do have a high number of patients whose poison type pokemon got too affectionate, never mind Enlightened. Ah, but we'll have to endeavor to really focus on relaxing, at this rate.

I think the lack of a deadline should help us relax at least a little.

[Though she'd always been responsible about getting her work in on time whether it be for school or for work, there is a difference between doing something for business vs. pleasure.]

Well, there never has been a deadline, or least, not yet. Thankfully we've been able to treat all the patients so far that have come in through the center. Ah, but I do also want us to enjoy the trip. I can bring some fun puzzle games so we can just relax our minds. [Leave it to Ami to think puzzle games are relaxing.]
